IMPORTANT WINTER TRAIL INFORMATION PDF Print E-mail

When soil freezes all the moisture turns to ice crystals between the particles of the soil  and in clay or loam soil they are tightly packed together. As the moisture freezes the crystals expand and tear the clay apart shattering it, then as it thaws the soil become more porous and allows more moisture in. This is repeated with every successive thaw.

In Indiana we can get as many as 100 freeze thaw cycles in a season.

So, please be very careful when trying to ride the trails in the winter.  The best time to ride is when the trail is frozen solid.  On days when the temperature goes below freezing at night, the worst thing we can do is wait for the sun to come out and warm up the trail before riding.  The trails can be very soft even if it hasn’t rained recently. Even if the temperature stays below freezing South facing trails can defrost in sunlight and turn to mush.

If you are leaving ruts in the trail where you have ridden please leave the trail. The ruts will allow even more water to remain on the trail and make it even worse. If people see you riding they will want to ride too, so very soon the trail reaches a point of meltdown.

Brown County Gets IMBA "Epic" Status PDF Print E-mail

We are proud to announce that the Brown County State Park mountain bike trail system has been named as a 2011 recipient of the IMBA Epic trail designation.  This is huge news, as it puts Brown County in some very exclusive company.  Over the last ten years, IMBA has only given the Epic trail designation to 57 different trail systems around the world.  In addition to Brown County, this year's Epic class includes trail systems in Wales (UK), Yukon (CAN), North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

The IMBA Epic program singles out the premier trails and rides around the country as selected by IMBA staff who consult closely with club leaders to find out which trails are having the biggest influence on riders, as well as land managers and decision makers.  These rides are the models that shape IMBA's concept of what is possible for trail recreation on public lands.

The IMBA Epic trail designation comes after 8 years of very hard work by the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association.  Brown County's other accolades include being named one of the top 33 trails in North America in Bike magazine's March, 2009 issue.  Congratulations are due to the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association, its members and volunteers that have helped to create the preeminent mountain biking destination in the Midwest, and one of the best trails systems in the world.

While it is appropriate to pause and enjoy the accolades, there is much more work to be done.  The vision for Brown County State Park's mountain bike trail system is only half complete.  Trail designers and leaders of the HMBA envision a trail system that will ultimately be  much larger and more varied.  Almost 25 miles of planned trails are still unconstructed.  If you'd like to see them built sooner, please consider joining the HMBA or giving to the HMBA Trail Fund.

Great Trail!

In 2005 the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association (HMBA) was awarded a $150k RTP Grant for Brown County State Park.  The HMBA Trail Fund was started in 2006 to provide the funds needed to cash flow the RTP project.  HMBA’s success with the RTP grant lead to a $250k State Trail Grant.  The RTP and State Trail Grants allowed HMBA to combine volunteer and professional trail builders and resulted in the following trails.

New HMBA/IMBA Membership System Is Online PDF Print E-mail

A Message from HMBA President, Paul Arlinghaus: HMBA Membership System is Online!

The HMBA-IMBA Chapter program is now official.  The most obvious impact to the average HMBA member will be the membership system. There are many other behind the scenes things that will help HMBA.  The new membership system will be handled by IMBA.  They have paid staff and can stay on top of membership better than we can as a volunteer organization.

If you are or have been an HMBA member, you should be getting an email from imba.  If you live in central Indiana and have been and IMBA member, you should also be getting the email.  Now when you join, you will be joining both IMBA and HMBA.

If you haven't been and HMBA or IMBA member and want to join, here is the linking to join.

http://www.imba.com/join

Your membership fee will be split 60/40 (60 for IMBA).  The hope is to create enough funding to put an IMBA rep in this region.  So if in the past, you joined at a higher level, to provide more financial support to HMBA, please consider joining IMBA/HMBA and donating to the HMBA Trail Fund.  Donations to HMBA are not split with IMBA.

Thanks,

Paul Arlinghaus.
