Scales Lake Trail System - Boonville, IN
« on: February 07, 2012, 08:19:51 PM »
I don't see any other threads on this Forum Discussing Scales Lake so figure this could be a good one. This is where I learned to ride (go to school at Purdue so I'm up north for most of the year) and its definitely a good place to get in shape and challenge your skills. Figure this could be a good place to discuss trail conditions and what not.

Trail Map:

Here's some video's I took right before the new year when I was back home.

This is a fun trail system! I try to hit it up when I'm working in the area.

Is the teeter totter still there? Exciting  8)
Fat is where it's at!......Tires that is.
Moved to Idaho....:) Now I actually *mountain* bike.

Last time I was there in Oct the teeter was broken. It looked like the frame had snapped.

If you are going for the first time, I highly, highly suggest you ride with someone. It is very easy to get turned around with the 4 billion trails and crossings there are.

It is a great trail system though and its really hard to fathom how much is here on such a small park.

Agreed on the ride with someone if it's your first time, when I started riding out there it took me about 2 weeks of riding there everyday to get them memorized..

Rode Scales today, in great shape. The people working on the trails did a good job redoing some of the entrances/exits... I have more video's I'll post soon.

Probably headed out to Scales here in a bit. Even if it's a little muddy the hills are a good workout on the road.

Scales is good. A few muddy spots and the new entrance and exit at the back of the park are pretty soft. Otherwise picture perfect.

Hey, just so you guys know the teeter totter is back up. I believe they just take it down during the winter for whatever reason. Here's some video's I shot last week.

I've probably been there 30 times and I've yet to ride the Goat Trail. lol

Jedi is my favorite part of the trail system though.

Rode goat trail backwards and it's a good one.

There is a pretty big tree down on the whipsaw loop on the inside loop. It's rotten so it's not bad but it is large.

Great conditions though this morning.

I've posted a review of the entire park, including the trails, at http://www.born2roam.com/scaleslake.htm.

Pretty good review.

A lot of the trail is old, old, old stuff from what I understand. Brad Scales has been great in getting it up to IMBA standards and a lot of it shows.

The elevated boardwalk is there because that section of trail floods very often so they thought of that. Its pretty fun and interesting.

The blue arrows are for the Xterra course. I do agree that there could be lots more signage and thats why I said its good to go with someone who knows the park if youve never been there. It took me all of last summer to get comfortable with it and even now on some sections I get the "where am I" feeling. lol

Thanks for checking out my review, bballr. I had a lot of fun at Scales Lake and I'm looking forward to going back. Next time I'll investigate more of the trail, with help if I can find a local to follow. On that same trip I rode Ben Hawes in Owensboro and loved every minute of it. (That review is at http://www.born2roam.com/benhawes.htm if you're interested.) You ever ridden there?

Rich,

I rode Ben Hawes for the first time a couple weeks ago and its an awesome trail system. You would have no idea that the type of terrain existed from the parking lot. HAHA
