National Parks Service Approval!
« on: August 10, 2011, 10:41:53 PM »
In March 2007, Mike Hufhand, Alex Stewart, Jonathan Juillerate, and myself had a meeting with IDNR leadership.  During the meeting we were challenged to get more Hoosiers out recreating in our State Parks.  So we throw out the idea of Mountain Bike trails at Fort Harrison State Park.  While we knew there would be issues with this property due to is urban environment and because National Parks would be involved (the property was still deeded to the Federal Government).  And in fact the process was very difficult. But, with great excitement, we can announce that National Parks has signed off on mountain bike trails at Fort Harrison State Park.

I'd like to take a minute to mention some of the HMBA advocates who have made this possible.  The main champion of this property was Mike Hufhand.  He spent so much time scouting and flagging trails, that the park staff were concerned he had moved into the park.  Alex Stewart, Jonathan Juillerate, and myself joined Mike on many of the meetings on this project.  We also leaned on IMBA for support for documentation and studies with respect to mountain bike impact on birds. I would also like to thank those who attended the public meetings held over the years to show support for mountain biking in Indiana.

We are working out the final details and expect an official opening in October.  The official opening will be on a Friday morning to allow many public officials to attend.

If we could, lets keep it yellow until the grand opening.  We still don't have signs up and there are not park signs directing you to the trail.

Done.. Yellow with "hover over" note:

Open for pre-opening riding. Status will become officially active after the Grand Opening in October.

Tuesday was another important mile stone.  The parcel of land where we are currently building trails was dedicated as a Nature Preserve.  The Nature Preserve Charter was written to allow mountain biking.

Charlie Revard, Mike Hufhand, Jeff Fetterer, and myself attended the Natural Resource Commission Meeting, as we were expecting our mtb opponents to speak against mtb trails in a Nature Preserve.  Even though they did not speak at the meeting, it was still great for HMBA to be represented at the meeting.

There are many who falsely believe that mountain biking is not acceptable in Nature Preserves.  This resolves that argument in our favor.

I suspect that the Natural Resource Commission is not on many people's radar screens, but it is one of the things the HMBA board pays close attention to and attends regularly.  Please thank those who took the time to join me at the meeting.

Also, a big thanks to the Department of Natural Resources and State Parks.  This has not been an easy thing to pull of and they have worked very hard to support us.  In large part, Fort Harrison State Park's mountain bike trails came due to the support of Rob Carter, Director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.  He brought up Fort Harrison in a meeting in 2007 and that put things in motion.
