Having not ridden Avon in years decided to give it a shot and check things out again. First off the section by the softball fields (Brians freeride). This section doesnt really have many obstacles left except for the bridge, which has steps instead of a ramp. Not sure why there are steps for bikes but thats the way it is. Also there is a need to put a trail up the sideslope under the Poplar Pass trail, cause that lower portion is ALWAYS muddy. As for Poplar Pass it is probably the only original trail that could be left alone. Climbing Tulip is WAY too hard for most and pretty much the same for Willow Ridge. These trails are VERY rutted and just too difficult to attract most riders. There are some positive things down on the S end of the park and there is alot of area on the SW side that looks like it could be added to existing stuff. The problem would be hooking the N side to the S side of the park. Also ALOT of signs would be needed and closing off old rogue trails on the N side. This place has the base to be a fun, little park. I know there is a group working and trying to resurrect Avon. Id like to help, but it would take alot of people to make any real impact. Franke Park in Ft Wayne seemed to be in a similar state and it looks like they are turning it around. Maybe Avon can too!!
