Knocking sound when I ride.
« on: May 11, 2011, 03:14:25 PM »
Need some experienced imput here.  I have a mid to late model Trek singletrack 930 and I use it for commuting and giving my 18 month old rides in a seat that snaps on a rack.
Lately when I ride I've noticed a knocking sound, like someone is just tapping the frame with a rock or somthing.  I have inspected the bike and there is nothing loose that I can tell.  I think it is coming from the front wheel but what is strange is there is no rhythm to it at all, just very random. ???  Could this come from the bearings in the wheel?  It seems to spin fine?

Thanks in advance for any input.

See if the sound occurs only when you are pedaling or anytime the wheels are turning.  It may be a loose crank-arm or BB cup is the sound only occurs when pedaling.

Pull your seatpost and clean it and the seat tube. Reinstall after applying a very light coat of grease.   I use a light lithium type grease.   Easy and quick to perform, can be a cause for random clicking.

I wouldn't worry about it.  It is supposed to do that.

Possible reasons for the knocking sound:
Hub, loose spoke, rebound adjuster on suspension fork, stem, handlebar, ovalized headtube, shot bearings on headset, lock on grips, bottom bracket, crank, seat post, saddle, cracked frame.

I stopped riding one of my bikes because I couldn't keep sand out of the seat tube. I tried DAILY cleaning, a "condom" made out of an old tube, yadda yadda....it would go away for most of the ride and then return. The random ticking noise was driving me nuts!

Loose nut behind the wheel?

Other possible culprits of the knocking.

Bad con rod, main bearing going out, low octane, someone at the door.

front or back?

Apply front brake, & put your finger/hand down near where the frame & headset cups are. Push bike forward & back & see if you can feel anything moving. Odd time after adjusting a stem/spacers I'll notice the headset needs to be snugged up, if it gets loose it can knock.

Moved to Idaho....:) Now I actually *mountain* bike.

Once you have eliminated any loose bearings/part, you may want to consult a psychic.  That knocking my be  a spirit from...the other side....trying to help you with your cadence.....

Here' a good tutorial from Park tool about headset service. Scroll down about 3/4 of the page to "Headset Adjustment - Threadless Type" and read how to test, may be the source of the problem.

I have finally taken some time to look at the bike & I isolated the sound to the front wheel.  Does that mean the berings are bad?  Do I need a new wheel or is there a way to take it apart and get it right again?   :-\
