Help your trails by hiking.
« on: June 16, 2010, 11:43:35 AM »
The past month’s weather has been pretty brutal for riding off road.  It also has been pretty tough on our trails.  Storms knock down trees, the rain helps weeds along the trail grow, and trail users out on wet trails create low spots that hold water.

While many have helped by staying off the trails, many of us help by going onto the trails.  Not with our bikes, but with our favorite trail tool.  Almost any trail user can hike with clippers to cut back branches, a rake to remove small branches from the trail, or a trash bag to pick up any trash along the trail.  Our more experienced trail builders often walk with a rhino (a large hoe), and repair any section of the trail that is holding water.  Some will take out a weed trimmer or hand saw to fight back the undergrowth and clear small down fall.  And especially with the high winds in many of the recent storm’s, HMBA’s certified chainsaw operators have been out in force removing downed trees.

Our trails are just as much fun to hike as to ride, so hiking with a tool is fun, good exercise, and helps keep Indiana’s trail in top shape.  So please consider taking a hike for better trails.  If you see something you know how to fix, then go for it.  If you see something that needs more experience trail workers, then report the issue on the HMBA forum.

When our trails are in need of work, that forces us to pull HMBA’s experienced trail builders away from building new trails so that they can help with trail maintenance.  So every small bit of help we get means more new trails for us all to ride.  Ultimately the amount of mountain bike trails we have in Indiana will be determined by how many miles of trail we can maintain.

Hi Paul,

I would love to take a more active roll in helping out the HMBA, but am not sure about some of the trail work requested as far as chain sawing, hauling rocks, swinging a rhino, etc.  A friend of mine started a Meet Up group for women mountain bikers in the area and I might not be the only one who wants to help but is intimidated by some of the trail maintenance tasks.  Is there anything that we could do? Maybe organize a Women of HMBA trail work session?  I might be the only one interested, but if that's something that would be helpful I could start asking around.  I talked to Tania last Monday and she said that you are HMBA and what she meant by that was there is a lot of work to do and you do most of it.  Let me know!

One task that anyone can perform is to grab a pruner and hike the trails.  Cut anything off that reaches out onto the trail enough for you to touch it as you ride by.  Include overhead branches that might touch your helmet if you were on the bike.

I did some of this yesterday on Schooner and Walnut (the section between Hoosiers Nest and the road crossing). I focused on the sticker vines/bushes - while I am sure I missed some it should be better for now. A couple of patches on Schooner I had to give up on as my pruners were a bit too small, but it was a beginning.

One other thing to do while trimming back branches is to clear any sticks that are on the trail.  Nothing worse than coming around a corner and have your front tire roll over a stick, kicking the tire out on you.
Shin guards! We don't need no stinkin' shin guards!
DOH!
