status of Avon
« on: August 27, 2009, 02:00:39 PM »
I live in Avon, but do not ride it very often. It seems to me that it has a lot of potential, especially now that the new land is part of the park (south of the train tracks). However what is currently now rideable is either very hard or very easy. Avon has some great drop ins and pretty technical sections, but the park does not "flow" very well. Does anybody know if Avon is in HMBA's future to get going? I know there is an effort to get the trails going at Southwestway and Ft. Harrison, but Avon now has more land and with existing ridgelines could be a great place to ride. I work Saturdays, so I havent been able to help in any trail building sessions but should be getting Sats off soon.  I'd be a trail building beginner but would like to help. I could probably get a helping hand or two also.

There is MUCH going on at Avon, however, most is behind the scenes.  PM me with an e-amil address and I can get you up to speed on Avon's past, present, and what we THINK the future holds.

How about adding some jumps and some more raised bidges.

We hiked the trails this afternoon, wow that new road is really messing things up.  That is a shame!!  We used to live about a mile from the park and still return to Avon often to visit family.  I remember riding in the area of the new road and seeing a bunch of owls standing on the ground and of course many dear in the area.  It will be nice to get construction done and see what remains.

Is there much to ride out at Avon right now?

I'm a government slacker and have Wednesday off (11/11), since I have some errands out that way I figured I could get a short ride in if it doesn't rain on Tuesday.    Just curious if it would be worth my effort to pack the bike along.

Definitely better than not riding.  Probably a fourth or third of the trails were closed a few weeks ago.  If you are in the area I would say go ahead and ride.

I rode yesterday afternoon.  I think I was the only bike on the trails even though the park was FULL!  Most of the fun Mt. Bike trails were still covered in leaves making it very difficult to find the line.  The easy trails and even "Brian's Freeride" had been cleared.  If I had a gas leaf blower I would be happy to go out and do some maintenance but I'm not sure if that is allowed by just anyone.  Really only a few of the trails are closed so you can still get a good fun ride in out there just be aware of the leaves.

I can second the above post.  I went back to Avon recently now that I am a much better rider than when I started in June, with the intention of tackling the more advanced trails.  They are almost all covered in leaves!  I had a few harrowing experiences on those trails, and they were a blast, but only when I wasn't worried about veering off the beaten path.  Leaf blower to the rescue? :-)

The leaves definitely made for an interesting ride, especially when it's been a long time since I've ridden those trails -- there were a few sections I wasn't sure if I need to go left or right of a tree (couldn't tell with all the leaves), so I did some "dirt sampling" on more than one occasion when I chose the wrong path.  Should be interesting to see what parts of me start changing colors in the next few days!

Looks like several trails have come about since I last rode off-road seriously.  I'll have to get out and try Avon sometime.
I've been working at shops in Indy for the past three years (and driving from Greencastle), so there hasn't been any time for rides that didn't start at my front door.
