Upcoming Trail Work

Many thanks go out to Nick, Scott, Paul, Jay, and Bill for doing some trailbuilding on Sat.    The "sucky U" is officially gone! Hooray!

In it's place is an additional  1/4 mile of  scenic, flowing contour trail that should make the end of the lap more enjoyable.  Plus it's sustainable, which means that it is made to last, drains well, and mostly maintainance free.    Here's a preview:

http://www.hmba.org/index.php?set_albumName=Winter-2005-2006&name=gallery&include=view_album.php

Now if the weather will just cooperate with us.    Watch out for the freeze thaw effect.   If the evening temps are at or below freezing, and daytime temps rise above freezing, the trail can be real soft and susteptible to tire ruts that can lead to damage.    Several days of above freezing nighttime temps should put us in the clear.

Please ride responsibly.

A few of us will be finishing up a reroute close to the road crossing.   This is about a 1/2 mile from the Trailhead going clockwise.    Be there or be square.   9am start.

If the weather permits, a trail ride to follow.   Might bring the hardtail for a road session if we get a bit of rain.

Saturday's work was oh so gratifying.   The end of the trail will now officially give you a big kiss instead of that kick in the pants it used to.   The big gully or sandy corkscrew is gone and in it's place...you guessed it...sweet curvy contours like a beautiful woman.    Infact, let's just call it "Marilyn Monroe."    Also, you'll find a nice insloped banked turn we might just call the "Love Bank."

Ride On.

Any parts of the trail that you can name "Antonio Banderas" for us ladies?  You know, a section that is smooth, flowing, and cut just perfectly?

Sounds like you have more specialized knowledge of this Banderas character's unique features than I do, so I'll have to defer to you on that one!

Antonio Banderas is a woman.  Named Guadalupe.

And yet, still cut in all the right places as it turns out.  And how about that accent?  Doesn't matter what he/she is wearing . . . .

April 29th and 30th Trail work day

There are 2 projects planned for this upcoming weekend at WWP that we need workers for.

1) installing a rock garden in a marshy section before the floating bridge going CCW.  The park is providing large rocks and crushed stone for this we just need the manpower.

2) Installing a culvert in the drainage ditch towards the beginning of the CCW trailhead.  Again the park is providing the materials.

3) The park will also be installing some drainage tiles and crushed rock in the big dig.  I'm not sure when this will happen, but they will be providing the materials and labor for this project, just thought I'd share the plans.

I'll be          to arrive around 9am Saturday morning, Loretta will be out there for sure, not sure about what time though.  Please come and install a cool new feature into the trail, and clean up some of the muddy mess.  You should bring water and portable food for yourself.  The tools will all be provided.  Please feel free to contact me or post here so we can get an idea of how many people can make it: mploch@gmail.com or 317-538-3434 for more details etc.

p.s. bring your bike and ride a little afterwards!

Thanks,
Matt

I should be there!  9am sharp!  Never helped at westwood so I'll make this my first!

I rode a couple of laps last week for the first time this year at WW and the improvements this spring from last year have been terrific!  Kudo's to all that have brought this trail to life in the last few years!

Also I did run across two trees down...first one going CCW was at mile 5.0 and the second one was at 7.3 or so.  It was last Thursday so you might already have them cut out!

If I'm not mistaken the downed trees have been removed as of Sunday afternoon.  If my information is incorrect please post an update.

Thanks!

Harp & I rode 2 laps today and no down trees.  Also, no work done to date at big dig.  FYI

Mike, Tim, Todd and I knocked out the culvert at the beginning of the trail.  There was so much water standing that all the soil around it was like peanut butter so we put some temporary barriers to let it dry out before we put wheels on it.  Hopefully it will allow the water to drain down past the trail and keep the section nice and dry for tires!  Stay tuned for more projects coming soon!

So I had a few hours to kill today and wandered out to WW to work on a re-route.  About a quarter of a mile before you get to the rock garden was a stretch of unrideable mud.  It was terrible.  It sucked.  It was embarrasing.

It is now gone.

The re-route is about 150 feet long and avoids that low area.  It poured down rain the whole time I was out there so the trail was pretty much soaked.  This new re-route needs finish work but it is rideable right now.

Wow you da man!  I was at lunch when the rain came through and we sat an extra 20 minutes waiting for it because we didn't want to get wet, hows that for a hardy mountain biker for ya.   thanks for doing that reroute I'm sure it was a crap job!

Huf and/or Matt will probably go through the re-route and do the finish work.  With the rain it was really tough to do any finish work.  Most of the organic material has been removed but the little finish work is what really separates good trail from great trail.

I will leave that work to the pros.

I also took note of several places that will need to be armored with rock and crushed stone.  The rock garden is holding up relatively well but is holding water in a couple of spots.  As soon as we can get the tractor down the horse trail we will dup a couple of buckets of crushed stone out there to firm it up.
