2018 SWW Trail Conditions and Issues

The new year is here!


Currently thawing out from the Big Freeze of 2018. Trails will be unrideable/unuseable all week. Please stay off. We can't close the park to keep people off the trials, but consider the trails unofficially closed. MTB Project has been updated.

After the Big Thaw of 2018, we have another freeze! Should be good to go all next week. MTB Project status changed to GREEN (but should be BLUE for freeze/Thaw)

Unfortunately, not to anyone's surprise, with all the rain expected and recent snowmelt the trails will be way too soft. so RED conditions expected for the next week or so.

Any update as of today? We dodged most of the rain yesterday so we have had 3 days of dry weather. I’m not familiar enough with the trials and their tendancies after rain.

Updated MTB Project this morning. In a nutshell, Mann Hill trails and Upper Cottonwood 99% dry, Lenape solid Yellow with wet in all the usual seeping spots. Entire river bottom is underwater, Lower Cottonwood and the low area around the #10 Boy Scout bridge are underwater.

Area around Boy Scout bridge no longer underwater, you can make a full loop on Lenape.  Still several of the usual areas on Lenape that are wet.  Trail was getting wetter a little after 10 today as the ground was thawing from the overnight freeze.  Should be better later in the day today.


Lower Cottonwood still underwater, so if you go down Rollercoaster Ridge be prepared to bring it back up.  The double track out to the lakes is wet in several spots as well.  Overall the trails are in good shape, just some problem areas/general wetness as mentioned earlier.

There is an erosion problem at the crib wall on Lenape out by the highway.  It is safe to ride but will need to be fixed.

There is a large tree down, 25"-30" diameter.  It is on the single track headed towards the parking lot from the bottom of the steep downhill on the map.http://www.mobilemaplets.com/showplace/14261

Tree down on levee.  Small enough to be cut up with folding saw but a chain saw would make quick work of it.

Yeh, I had my folding saw with me when out there Sunday but was getting short on daylight AND there are about 2-3 branches that would need cut.  Two are about 4-6" in diameter and the other branch is about 2-3".

I'd like to meet up with some leaders for this park to get trained up and certified for trail work. 
I've already been out once with my chainsaw to clear around 10 trees after the windstorm, and I plan to go out again soon to clear up this next round. 
I'd love to do it with the blessing of and under the guise of the HMBA, but still haven't heard back from anyone about getting started.

I will PM you and Paul about HMBA chainsaw certification. While we greatly appreciate the help with clearing the fallen trees at SWW, please do not use a chainsaw at SWW or any HMBA maintained trail system till you can get a HMBA Safety certification. This certification is a requirement that will protect you and HMBA if you or anyone get injured as a result of your chainsaw use.


I normally lead volunteer work at SWW, and I and a couple of other regular volunteers have the chainsaw training. I have been very busy lately with work and school commitments, so it has been challenging to keep up with any maintenance there.

Large tree down across trail near Hidden Lake.  From the looks of the worn down path around it must have been down for some time now.
