Camp Creek Hiking trail: Unathorized trail work.
« on: February 03, 2017, 09:13:34 AM »
PSA:  Park staff have noticed some unauthorized trail work on the Camp Creek hiking trail (Inside paved path).  They think the work may be to make the trail more bike-able.  Park staff and CO's are on the look out for however is doing the trail modifications.

Just curious, who does the trail maintenance for the hiking trails?  Last time I hiked camp creek it was getting difficult to follow in some areas.

The simple answer to your question is "no one".  I believe that responsibility falls to the park staff, but the park is too understaffed and underfunded to have that high on their list of priorities.  I usually stop to do basic stuff, moving deadfall of the trail, etc, but nothing more than that, and it's been quite a while since I was over there.

The more important question is who is going to finish the trail?  The bulk of the work was done by AmeriCorps volunteers a couple years ago, with some design recommendations from Mike Hufhand, but since then AmeriCorps hasn't been back, and work on the south leg of the trail has completely stopped.

It's a shame, too.  There are some great spots in that little tract of land that people should definitely see.

Sounds like an opportunity. If they can't finish it ... let the MTBERS take it over.  There is PLENTY of room in that area. Cyclists don't seem to discourage hikers and do% walkers based on the numbers I see on Schoen and Lawrence Creek trails.

I've talked with the park manager about the incomplete southern part of new Camp Creek foot trail. DINO owes the park for an event usage, so we agreed to trade some volunteer labor for work building 2-3 new bridges this winter/spring. I'll try to share here when that happens, good will between MTB/race organizations and properties do get noticed.
I don't see it becoming a MTB trail however...

Absolutely.  I think this is a great idea.
