I run a 1 X 10 ,30t nw with 11-36 on both my bikes , Anthem 27.5 and a hard tail 29er. I have enough gear for about any thing I've ridden in Indiana and Michigan. Most trails I find I'm in the middle of the cassette ,Brown County I get into the 36t. But I'm an 61yr. old guy. and a little over weight.
