PressFit30 Bottom Bracket options, .. help
« on: December 23, 2015, 09:25:07 PM »
So I just bought a frame (Salsa Spearfish) that has a Pressfit30 bottom bracket, .. yea, another bottom bracket type!

I want to run 9 speed stuff with hollowtech II cranks and I already have to use an adapter on this bottom bracket to run them (essentially it allows me to use 24mm spindle type cranks). I have a bunch of 9 speed stuff that I'd like to keep running because it's a heck of lot cheaper right now than buying all new 10 speed bb30 stuff. But the current bottom bracket it came with has just a little crunchiness to the bearings on one side. I know that a new BB is inevitable.

So does anyone have an idea of the options I might have on this? I've seen all kinds of setups for this BB type, ... a plastic shell (that gets pressed in) that allows threaded BB's, another PF30 with adapters(but I can't find anything like the original), a PF30 conversion BB (praxis), etc. The current pf30 installed is basically two individual cups with bearings but I don't see that kind of BB anywhere to purchase which makes me think it might just be an older model/system. What I see shopping online are basically cups with bearings that are somehow connected through the shell.

Confused? Me too. If you have any experience I'd love to hear any recommendations on how to best proceed with a new BB for this PF30 shell. I'm light headed just thinking about this again.

You should contact Ics and ask Scott about it since he's a salsa dealer.

Have a Niner Jet 9 RDO, I run a Shimano 2 x 10 setup, been fighting the dreaded PF30 creak. First ordered the Wheels Manufacturing PF30 outboard angular contact, threaded setup. Followed directions and found out tools called out did NOT fit. Contacted WF and they were standup and sent me another BB. This one fit so loose, I didn't even have to press in the drive side cup. It pushed in by hand. The tools fit perfectly though, needless to say it creaked severely. Took it out, used Loctite primer 6749 and Loctite 609 and thought the problem was solved. My driveway and street ride seemed good. However in the real world the bb creaked as soon as I started the VBR climb yesterday. Needless to say I am PISSED, has anybody tried the BBInfinity bottom brackets? It seems like like the 1 piece pressed in setup could be the ticket. Looking for suggestions or comments on BBInfinity.

I researched this a little as my feeling is that I'll need to replace the current BB here fairly soon. Don't know about the Infinity but I ordered a conversion BB from Praxxis for HollowtechII cranks. Has heard a lot of good things about it but have not installed it yet. Wheels Manufacturing- I had read that they still can exhibit that creakiness having to use the loctite. My other consideration was the KCNC outboard BB as I've had good service from Real World Cycling. Let us know if that works well as I don't see a lot of good info on options for that BB standard.
