HNF South Unit
« on: December 07, 2015, 10:45:42 AM »
Anyone have much experience riding trails in the south unit of the HNF (or basically anywhere outside of Hickory/Nebo)? Some of these look worth the trip and looks like there is tons of mileage to be ridden.

18,19,20,4,3  I've ridden and they're all fun. Your best bet is to stick to the outer trails the most to avoid the horse bogs. Stop in at Ics and talk to Scott he can hook you up

Nate Hawkins loaded those trails into MTB project (www.mtbproject.com).  In addition to the maps, each trail has a description.  This may help you pick routes as some are more fun than others by bike.

Should have clarified more. I'm referring to trails totally outside of the Hickory Ridge/Nebo System down towards Paoli, such as Young's Creek.

I would suggest posting up on the Evansville Mountain Biking Association's Facebook page for intel on those trails. I believe that some of them ride there and that they have had discussions with the Southern HNF office.

If I recall, the rider code-named "YellowRocketBike", may know a little more about Tipsaw Lake and maybe the Oriole trails near Tell City. If he still checks into the HMBA site, he may be able to provide some enlightenment about them. He's from that area.

It's been many years since I was on the Oriole Trails, so I cannot comment on current conditions. I recall them as being a fun ride, but with many sections shared by horses, it created some deep, muddy bogs.

If you happen to get out on them, please let the rest of us know!
