Brakes vs New Pads
« on: November 11, 2015, 10:49:49 PM »
Howdy,
I want to install new pads on my SRAM XO brakes but the cylinder won't push back out of the way to insert the new pads.

I dialed back the adjuster which should have permitted space for the new pads but no luck.

Any ideas?

Also,
When I tighten my sram cranks down, they bind up and I can feel resistance. If I loosen them a bit, it's better but obviously can't ride like that. Any thoughts? I've tried removing all spacers, no luck. Also, there's no grinding sound.

I'm transferring my parts to a lovely new Kona hei hei Supreme frame and haven't dealt with these issues in 18 months.

Thanks for your time.

Press the caliper pistons back into the caliper with the bleed block. If you don't have one use a large screwdriver or pliers but be careful not to damage the piston.

I had the same problem with my xo trails but just on the rear brake. SRAM ended up replacing them with a set of guides.

On the cranks, do you have the wavy washer on there? I think the purpose of it is to keep crank tension on the bearing without putting excessive side load on it.  I had the same thing happen and finally figured out I left the washer off.

Thanks for the responses.

I tried pressing the calipers back into the housing, they didn't seem to budge.
May have to bleed them a bit to get them back.
Unfortunately the adjuster for that didn't help.

Fett, on the wavy washer, no it's not in there.
Does it go on the drive side?

Thanks
Greg

Yes, I believe it does go on the drive side.

I am not familiar with your break system, but you may need to crack open the fill screw on the handle and then try to push the calipers back in.  If it is very full, you're trying to compress the fluid when you push them out.

Plastic tire levers work pretty well to push the calipers back in.  Being plastic, they will not scratch the caliper face.

A wavy washer might be the ticket.  Also, make sure you are tightening to the correct torque.  With the price of cranks these days, one really cannot afford not to use a torque wrench.

This is good stuff, thanks.

I'm sure the bleeding thing will work, was trying to avoid that though.

As for the crank, I've tried the wavy plus the bearing seal on the drive side, still binds.
Tried varying sets of those plus a spacer, always binds.
It's a brand new press-fit SRAM bottom bracket so this is puzzling.

It's part of this new 2015 Kona Hei Hei Supreme frame I found but brakes and cranks are the last barrier to riding it. (Which is killing me)
