Yellowwood Trail Building Kick Off: Sat Dec 6th at 9:00AM
« on: November 28, 2014, 03:37:28 PM »
We have 1.5 miles of trail flagged and ready for construction at Yellowwood State Forest.  The first trail we are working on will be a 5.5 to 6 mile loop around crooked Creek Lake.

We will meet at the upper Handicap Hunter Parking lot off of Crooked Creek Road.

Take 46 West out of Nashvillle for 4.9 miles.
Turn Left (South) on Crooked Creek Road
Go 1.8 miles on Crooked Creek Rd (just over the top of the hill)
Parking lot is on the right.

We will meet between 9:00AM and 9:15, then head back to the work site.  The work site is a couple miles from the parking lot.  You can bike or drive (gravel fire road) closer to the work site.

I will bring tools.

This will be a back country hand build trail.  It should be similar to North Tower at BCSP, but with longer climbs/descents and some steeper sections.

I will be there.
If the extended weather forecast I read is close to what happens the weather should be decent.

Rain on Friday will not prevent us from trail building. We should have very good conditions for trail building.

Just be dressed ready to hike and work in the woods. A good pair of hiking boots and work gloves are recommended. I will be bring the needed tools.

We are meeting tomorrow at 9:00AM rain or shine.  It may still be raining at 9:00AM but it will take us about an hour to get to the work site so the rain should be finished by the time we are ready to build.

The trails in Yellowwood will be much more of a back county experience than the trails in BCSP.  Building back county trails presents some logistical challenges.  It is not easy to get to the work site.  We will be meeting at the Upper handicap parking lot off of Crooked Creek Rd.  If you are heading south on Crooked Creek Road from 46, it is the parking lot on the right just after you crest the hill.

To get to the work site will will have to cross the road and follow the gravel road that is cabled closed.  This road is just north of the parking lot.  We follow that gravel road for about 3/4 of a mile and park.  We then will need to hike just shy of a half mile down the ridge top (kind of an old fire road) to the work site.

Here is a map to show the lay of the land.

Important points for the work session

1) Getting to the work site will be the biggest challenge of the day.
-Please arrive at 9:00AM.  We will be heading out by 9:15AM.
-If you arrive by 9:15, you may drive along the fire road and park closer to the work site.
-You may also ride a bike along the gravel road.
-If you drive, do not block the gravel road when you park
2) I will park my grey dodge dakota (loaded with tools) at spot we need to start hiking into the work site
-If you arrive late, please make sure that you can find get to where my truck is parked (hike or bike along the gravel road).
- Grab a rhino (hoe like tool) from the truck and hike down the ridge top.
3) bring rain gear.  We will likely be hiking in while it is still raining.  We will not be canceling due to rain.  We will only cancel for dangers winds or lightning.
4)While gun season for deer is over, there will still be some hunting going on.  It is still muzzle loader and bow season for deer.  I expect a few hunters to be out and about.  If you have orange, please where it.  If not we have some orange vests.

Thanks to everyone who came out to build new trail yesterday.  And big thanks to Jennifer for the chowder afterward!  It really hit the spot after a day's work.

Paul was right, the ground was perfect for working even with all the rain the days prior so we were able to get a lot done.

Stay tuned for info on the next Yellowwood work session.  I'd like to get at least one more big work day in before the end of the year.

How does the weekend of Jan 10th and 11th work for everyone?  I would like to work both saturday and Sunday.  Hopefully get in a ride saturday afternoon.  I could be up for camping if anyone is interested in winter camping.

I've put January 10 and 11 in the Bloomington Bicycle Club Ride Calendar.  I'm available that weekend and I'm sure there'll be more of BBC there.  If any of you out of towners would want to sleep in a real bed and shower, etc, I'm sure that a few of us BBC'rs would be gracious hosts.
