Anyone know of mtb shorts that include hip padding?  I've considered some snow boarding shorts that have hip padding, but that would mean wearing two pairs of shorts---mtb shorts for the seat padding, and snow baord shorts for the hips.  I know someone who rides like this occassionally, but I wondered if there was a two-in-one-product.

G-form makes something like what you're looking for.  They are made for DH/park riding and work well as I can attest to.  There is no "seat" padding.  I've ridden with just these on pedally rides and it was ok.  Taint area was a little tender, but not too bad.  I've also ridden with a regular pair of riding shorts and these over them and a pair of baggies over those, that was alright too.  More movement between the layers and a little hotter.  Not bad over all though.  The spandex portion is really thin.  If you were to wear just those, your man veggies would be on display.  Good for what they are designed for, fitting under a pair of baggie shorts for slayin' the DH.

     Hey Mahk! Glad you asked about these as I've been wearing hip pads for 2-3 years now.  Have Troy Lee but no riding pad, so wear 2nd short with pad and it can get a little over heated at times! So I just ordered a pair of the
zoic Impact liners.  Minimal protection from falls with seat pad.  Look forward to hittin some trail with you this season!  Thanks for the suggestion Charles

I'm a minimalist and was hoping to find one short that had it all--seat protection, crash protection, and thick enough to wear without baggies.  But it looks like I'll have to double up one way or another. 
 
Someone suggested using the hip pads from a pair of motor sport pants.  The pads attach with velcro and it looks like it would be very easy to put the pads inside a pair of regular bike shorts.  I talked with a Yamaha dealer here in town who showed me the pants / pads.  He offered to throw in a pair of pads if I bought a UTV.....
 
Google or Bing 'motor sport hip pads'.  I might get a $10 pair just to see how they work. 
 
Jeff I'm ready to get back on the trail.  Bike is ready to go too, just need to let things dry up a bit.

So the pads come with velcro to sew inside some shorts and you have removable hip pads? Sounds like something to try for more adventurous trails.
Makes me think of doing it inside some baggy shorts. If the hard side of the velcro is on the pads, the softer side in the shorts shouldn't bee too much of a bother when you go without pads. If it is the other way, I think some tricot mesh over the velcro would keep it from rubbing on you.

You could also use the no-snag velcro, omni-tape, or whatever you find it named, and it doesn't matter which side is on the shorts or which side is the pad.

I have seen on-line photos of the motor sport pants and pads, and looked at a pair of pants that a dealer waved at me (he was really trying to sell me a UTV).  The Velcro is an integral part of the pants / shorts and, I would guess, an integral part of the pads.  I think if you bought just the pads they would have the Velcro on them and you would have to sew Velcro into the shorts of your choice.  I would sew it into nylon, form-fitting shorts to help to help hold the pads in place, or even try going without the Velcro and see if the pads stayed in place on their own. 

RNP, have you seen those shorts up close and in-person?  The description says that they do have a seat pad and I wonder how it compares to the seat pad in mtb shorts.

I have owned a few different styles and brands in the past including several padded shorts.  Even though some riders prefer the pads built into the shorts, I like the pads built into whatever outer wear I am using at the time.  This way I can buy high quality cycling shorts and wear them alone, with padded outer shorts, padded outer pants, or under plain cycling pants.  The options seem to be more plentiful using this method.

To answer your question about the seat pad in the padded shorts.  Similar to cycling shorts they are all different depending on brand, quality level, and purpose.  Some have a very nice chamois while others are just a sponge.  A top quality pair of cycling shorts have the best chamois of all IMO, so that's why I prefer them against my tender skin in the nether region.

The only way to know if the shorts will suit your preference is to physically see a pair and maybe even try them on.  Shorts are almost as preferential as saddles.

    Hey Mahk, Looked for you today on the trails at BC! I wore my new Zoik Padded undershort with cycling pad and it was what I was looking for.  Minimal padded protection around the hip area and a pad.  I will agree with RNP about the pad and this had just a foam pad, not a top quality, thick cycling pad like on my racing kit.  But it did the job although after almost 3 hrs of SS trail riding, after none the last couple of months, other body parts were hurting enough that I never noticed that area in discomfort.  It was nice however having just the one layer under my pants instead of the protective pads and the cycling pad separate. I have a pair of Azonic mountain bike shorts with removable hip pads that I got years ago so you can ride with or without the hip pads.
