BB + Crankset Spindle Length
« on: June 19, 2014, 07:45:48 PM »
I have a sealed (non-maintainable) square taper BB with 123mm spindle length (measured with a digital caliper).  The BB, while a little sluggish from old grease, has no play and allows smooth free pedal movement, so I am not going to replace it.  I do need to get a new crankset to replace my worn one.  Do I HAVE to get a crankset that lists 123mm spindle length in the specs?

I've seen 123, 122.5, 122, 113, and 110 as possible crankset spindle length options.  I have NO idea why this spec is important.

Cranks have a width required for a proper chain line. A crank that needs a 110 would put your chain rings too far out on a 123.
I think most have a small range of plus or minus.
