Trail Work on Walnut: Sunday Aug 4th at 10:00AM
« on: July 30, 2013, 08:30:20 AM »
While most of the trail was in great shape last weekend, bikes were coming out of the woods covered in mud due to mud holes.  This doesn't look good to Park Management, which doesn't help HMBA's efforts to get the next wave of trails fully approved.

I will be arriving at 9:00AM on Sunday (Aug 4th) to starting moving materials to armor the mud holes between Limekiln and the Schooner trail head on Walnut.  If anyone wants to come early and help with moving rocks, I will be unloading the tool trail around 9:00AM at the Hoosier's Nest parking lot.  The main trail work session will start at 10:00AM.

There are other projects that need to be done.  I have some emergency exit signs that need to go up on Schooner.  This would be a big hike with signs and the sign driver tool.  Would be a two person job.  Also have some mud holes on the North Gate Connector that need attention.

I will be at BC tomorrow with the wife.  We will be riding from the north trailhead, so will be passing by North Gate.  I will toss my Rogue hoe in the back of the car and check out the spots on North Gate Connector while I'm there.  If you guys are over there when I pass by at some point, I'll stop and help out.

Great day for trail work! Was good meeting everyone, although I'm terrible with names I'll still have to ask you next time :)
Some serious rock armoring got done on walnut!

Thanks to greyhound for the subway too, great surprise and much needed :)

Great work day. I had a crazy crew show up and 9 for rock hunting.  They tried to see who could pull out the largest rock.  Lots of 2 person rocks for later.

We have about 20 volunteers at 10.  Enough to send a crew to work on the North Gate Trail and a crew to set trail markers on Schooner.  The rest of us worked on the mud holes on the Limekiln side of Walnut.

At the end of the day we finished off all the mud holes.

The photo below was until today a 8" deep mud hole.

We were ready to call it a day until Jerome the Gnome joined the work session.  He convinced us to not only armor a low spot, but to tempt riders with and inside skinny line

FYI, Gnomes don't actual;y do trail work, they just inspire trail works to work harder.

I also wanted to say thanks for Subway.  It was definitely appreciated.  Great work day.

Never know who will comment or show up after a work session.   I made it a point to ask multiple passing riders if they knew of the HMBA or the forum.  Some said yes and they just don't make it on very often.   Saying something on the trail is maybe all it takes to gain some regulars.

Enjoy,

David Kuehnen

Agreed!

Everyone that I meet and speak with on the trail gets asked the same question:  "Do you know about HMBA and HMBA.org?".

Thank You to the North Gate Trail crew, for the lesson in trail maintenance.
Had a good time.
