Trail Boss packable tool
« on: June 10, 2013, 08:16:14 PM »
I thought I would post a review of this tool in case anyone was looking at buying one.  I tried searching if anyone had reviewed or asked questions about one on here, but I couldn't find anything.  If there is a thread about this already, someone point me to it and I'll delete this one.

I bought the Trail boss with the McCleod head and the 4 12" handle sections.  I am very impressed with craftmanship of this tool.  The tool is pretty lightweight and easily packs into my Fox backpack/hydration pack combo with all my standard crap for a mountain bike ride.  My pack is fairly heavy with everything in it, but it is somewhat heavy without the Trail Boss anyway.

The McCleod head works really well for trail maintenance.  I haven't used it for trail building yet, just maintenance so far.  Drain clearing, muck removal, drain cutting, etc.  The handle has held up well so far.  No real slop or play in the fittings and the swing weight seems to work well.  I have used 1 handle, 3 handles, and all 4 at different times.  I got the 4 because I thought maybe in the future I could use 2 heads at a time if someone was helping me and didn't have any pack tools.

My only minor complaint is that the fittings loosen up occasionally, but that is to be expected with aluminum screw fittings.  I don't want to go hog wild tightening them and pull threads.  It is not a ash handled tool, but works nearly as well.  Much better than walking 3 miles to where work needs done carrying a regular tool over your shoulder.  The tool is a little on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for.  This thing has a good warranty and will last a long time.  I can use it on my property as well, so the price wasn't a real issue for me.

I would recommend this tool to anyone looking for a packable tool to take on a ride with them.

Thanks,

Jason

That is a nice pack able tool.  I get tired of using sticks to clear drains and hiking with a rhino is no fun and about impossible to ride with safely.  Might have to think about getting one.

I got tired of the sticks as well.  I also got tired of just using my hands to dig out the muck.  I didn't have any proper tools beside and hoe and shovel anyway so I was in the market for a McCleod, or Rogue Hoe, Rhino, or similar type tool.  This head really works well digging out muck and shaving dirt as well.  I may buy a few more heads down the road.

I'm hoping the saw and scabbard will be my father's day gift.  I can use it around my property as well so that was my justification for saying I really needed it for father's day.  Haha
