Adventure Hiking Trail conditions?
« on: June 05, 2013, 10:18:43 AM »
I would like to ride part of the AHT this weekend if conditions permit. I thought I would start at the Group camp and ride the road to the Pioneer Shelter trailhead. Then follow it across Cold Friday Rd. and up to the Ohio River overlook and back and then ride the Firetower/RR. It should be a total of about 22-25 miles and be an awesome ride. That is, if it's not a total mess. Does anyone know what the conditions are like for that portion of the AHT?

I have been on parts of it over the past few months. They had logged sections near 462, between there and the Fire Tower cross-over, so trail markings may be messed up by their equipment.

From the campground to Pioneer Cabin was good when I rode it a couple weeks ago.

We marked the trail between Pioneer Cabin and Cold Friday with a few more signs in January, and cleared some fallen limbs, etc. but that was five months ago.

Be prepared for an adventure. Carry plenty of water and cache some along the way, maybe at the Cold Friday and Old Forest road cross-overs.

i would definitely suggest dropping a cooler at old forest road parking lot...i second bentcranks suggestion on watching for ticks, and chiggers too...hopefully it's early enough they won't be too big of a problem...good luck and post up conditions after your ride...
