Trail Building @ The Tuck.
« on: October 27, 2012, 07:35:55 AM »
I will be building a new connector trail today, Sat, 10-27-12. It's right by Shelter # 1, at the top of the hill. I'll be there from 9 to 1 PM.

This trail will tie the recently built section across the road to the old trails.....I'll have some extra tools if anybody would like to help. Probably do some riding also, if the trails are dry enough.

Stay tuned for more trail building opportunities at Muscatatuck during the fall and winter months. With all the new contractor built trails there are many sections that need tweaking to make them play nicely with the old trail system..... Then by riding season next spring, we'll have smooth flowing, well marking trails to show off!

I am in town every Tuesday and I have been riding there almost every Tuesday night.  The new trails are great. They are riding in well and really has made this trail system one of my favorites for sure. Great job. It has been fun to try to include the new trails into a continuous trail. It flows great for single speed riding.

I agree bruce180vf. The Tuck trails are looking good, for sure......It is a challenge to hit all the trails without backtracking too much right now. Kind of a nice problem to have though.

Back to trail building, I got the connector finished @ Shelter # 1, tying the end of the new trails across the road with the older trail system.

Next, we'll be tackling a replacement for the open field trail section, behind Shelter # 2, where the DINO race Start/Finish line is located. The new trail will be moved to just inside the woods and tie the end of the new beginner trail to a spot near where the Trail Kiosh is now.

There will be a trail build day at Muscatatuck, this Saturday, Nov 17th.... Please meet at Shelter # 2, at 9 AM. Or whenever you can get there, before 1 PM.

We'll be working right behind the Shelter, moving the open field trail section into the woods. I'll have tools available, no experience necessary.

If you haven't ridden at MCP this year, you're in for a big surprise. Lot's of new trails..... Maybe somebody with more stamina than me could lead a ride after lunch?

Mark Rodgers and I got another big section of the field to woods trail reroute done Saturday, behind Shelter # 2.... Thanks Mark.

There's some of the biggest oaks I've ever seen on the hillside where we're working. The Park Manager, Greg Martin, said that they could be over 250 years old!

Greg got the grant to build the new trails in the park this year, and has been very positive about letting the local bikers make the older trails more mtn bike friendly in the last three years. No more fall line, three foot deep, eroded ditch trail sections. (Unless you're doing the DINO downhill event.)

Worked on the new Shelter # 2 reroute yesterday and I'm pleased to say it's done for the winter. I'm going to wait until spring to finish tying in the ends to the existing trail system.

Happiness..is a warm Rhino Tool... Dig, Dig, Chop, Chop. ( With apologies to John Lennon and his "Happiness is a Warm Gun" song.)

Time to do some more trail building @ Muscatatuck. Started on a small reroute along the river, by Shelter # 3. This is to modify one of the last long fall line sections left and Nick says it's time to go!
I think the feeling is that the trail will be more fun to ride in both directions after this reroute is done.

Help needed.

I got the Shelter # 2 " Into the Woods" reroute opened up yesterday. One end is completely done and the other is cleared and rideable, but still needs the topsoil removed.

There are a couple of other little trail projects that are planned at the Tuck.

1-A reroute along the river to shortcut a fall line section of original trail. Already started, 10 manhours left to complete.

2- By the west entrance, off Gum street, there will be some trail layout changes made to keep riders off the road as much as possible. The first is where the two trail sections that now use the road as a connector, will have it moved into the woods. It's pretty flat in that area and shouldn't take too long to finish, with some help.

3- The other change in that area is where the trail crosses the road. Right now riders have to travel down the road, then run along the grass field for awhile before reentering the woods. The new plan is to take a more direct route across the road and reenter the woods asap. Again, its kind of flat there and should be easy building.

It's been awhile since we've had the local crew doing much at the Tuck. If you'd like to help, please send me a text @ three-1-7, five-0-one, 5-1-0-nine. Or I'll try to post dates on this forum...Thanks.

Here's a temporary map of the trails at Muscatatuck. There's been a lot of changes in the last year.

We got the Shelter # 2 reroute completed yesterday, and then jumped on another reroute down by the river. It's very close to being done also. Just need to cut out some downed trees and join into the existing trail.

Thanks to Greg Burnett for the excellent help.

Thanks Elduder. Everybody has pulled together to make Muscatatuck, what I like to call "The Biggest Little Trails in Indiana."
If the Elduder, one of the areas best trail builders and well traveled mtn biker likes it, we must be doing something right.

As far as helping out, that brings back memories of all the trails we built at Versailles, in all kinds of weather..... I can still picture you taking a break with the rest of us from building Grandview Trail, drenched after a downpour and steam rising off your head, munching on Maria's brownie's and sloshing around in 4 inches of mud....Good Times, Great Crews!

BTW, Greg Burnett, his son Cory, and I finished the Reroute by the River tonight. Another fall line trail bites the dust.

Thanks to all that have help build the new trails. You have taken a fun trail system and built an outstanding trail system. It is amazing how you can add so many trails to a small area and it seems like you do not ride the same areas twice. Kudos to everyone. I need to get back soon.

Got another new trail section started today. It's by the back entrance off Gum St. This trail will replace the road section currently being used to tie the trails together on the south side.
There's still a lot to do before the Dino race at the end of the month. Any help would be appreciated.

We'll be building new trail today, Sat 6-8-13, at the Tuck. Start time: 1 PM, Stop time: probably around 6 PM. Show up when you can.... Please park at the Gum St lot. That's the back entrance to the park. Grab a tool out of my green Dakota truck.

We'll be directly across the street, go 25 ft down the trail, take a left on the new trail.
Great opportunity to get some "Paydirt Points" for DINO racers.
