I would get a cheaper or used bike in the meantime and sell it as soon as your desired lockers arrive for your expensive one.

Riding on Pavement / Biker vs Car in Carmel. Share the road.
« on: May 26, 2016, 08:13:29 PM »
Just passed a road biker vs car in Carmel.   The biker survived, but looked to have a leg injury.

By the size of the group there are probably HMBA members on scene.

Keep our unknown brother in your thoughts and remember:  Share the road.

EDIT: On the return trip home I spotted and stopped to speak to a rider who looked to either have been caught up in the accident or was tending to the riders bike.  He said the rider was taken to the ER to be checked, I take it that means he will survive.  He had two bikes with him, one was a carbon and the headtube was broken off the frame, the other I could not see clearly if it was damaged.

Town Run / Re: Town Run Trail Work Tuesday April 26th at 6:00PM
« on: April 26, 2016, 07:39:20 PM »
The big stiff from this evenings round missed us, tomorrow's looks nasty and will probably keep the trail closed past tomorrow's tree plantings.

I'm off Thursday and can help with cleanup if a crew is organized, or just walk the trail and scout for damage (rain or shine) if allowed.

Tech Bench / Superfly 5 or X-Cal?
« on: April 25, 2016, 10:00:07 PM »
I have decided it is time to move on from my re-starter bike, a Trek Marlin 5 w/ RockShox 30 Silver coil fork, to something better.  Some little things are going bad and today was the second time I have had the bottom bracket come loose during harder riding at Town Run (gave it all I had on everything but skipped the 2 big drops).  I want to trade it in or convert it to a commuter before I actually break something on it or me.

To replace it, I want a $1000 - $1500 27.5" 15.5-16.5" hardtail capable of handling any XC trail Indiana/Michigan has to offer.  I have decided to give an air fork a try since I can always put the 30 Silver on it if I have issues.  I don't yet feel I need full suspension, I'm not that fast or aggressive.  I prefer Trek as we are family friends with one of their local dealers.  I also prefer not to deal with Suntour forks again.

Those criteria lead me to an high end X-Cal or the "low end" Superfly.

I am leaning towards a Superfly5 because of the tapered tube, but am not familiar with press fit BB's

The X-Cal 9 is super nice, but not tapered and nearly as much as the Superfly

The X-Cal 8 is tempting because of price and familiar and simple coil fork, but is lower spec all around.

Any guidance and suggestions are appreciated.

People with loud music is why my 2012 Corolla is equipped with the 4 horn set from a 1992 Cadillac DeVille.  ;D

If I ran into those people on the trail, and could do something similar on my bike for a reasonable weight, I would.

At 3pm, from 465 I could see equipment and people planting trees in the South Loop.

The FX35 requires drilling into the bumper bar.

This is funny.   ;D

Tech Bench / Re: Best car trailer hitch brand for paint durability?
« on: February 01, 2016, 08:26:11 PM »
I went with Curt and their wiring harness so I can also pull a little trailer.

I will paint over the hitch with Epoxy shock paint so it will be chip resistant.  I plan to have this car, and the hitch, for 10 years.  I want to keep it all nice.

General Trail Information / Permit required signage?
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:14:53 AM »
Will the DNR / HMBA be adding any additional or more conspicuous signage to the trails to warn when entering a Permit required section of trail?

For instance, at Fort Ben, the only signage at the fork 1/2 way around Camp Glenn for Lawrence Creek trail was a 3.5 inch wide fiberglass trail marker post that says "LC", a directional arrow, and a blue square that stands for "intermediate".  It would be very easy for someone new to the trail to make a wrong turn at the fork.

I am going with a hitch mounted rack for the new car.  Especially since I am getting a rack for free. :-)
All brands of hitch for this car are of the same basic design.  The biggest difference I can see there being will be paint quality and durability.
 Which brands hold up best?

Tech Bench / Re: Dad want's to ride again... Early 1980's Mongoose ATB
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:09:47 PM »
Will replace rim strips, brake pads are on the list, don't want him running into my back tire, or careening off a curve.

Crank teeth are intact, brake pulleys look to be metal, seatpost is not seized, but I have not inspected derailleur pulley.

Dad want's to try mountain biking with me again.  We used to ride together when I was little, and he still has his bike which he properly stored in working order about 12 years ago.

It's a survivor, a 1984ish Mongoose ATB chrome rigid with original Suntour groupset and Diacompe brakes.  Since he stored it with all moving parts relaxed, it may only need cleaned, rubber parts replaced, and greased.

It will need tires, but what else would possibly be bad?

Town Run / Re: What's happening to the south loop?
« on: January 07, 2016, 12:09:59 AM »
I knew about them, thanks to this site...  I was hoping it was them, not a builder, utility worker, or developer uncaringly driving over the trails.

If I recall, the bike trails are still part of it... right?

Town Run / What's happening to the south loop?

From the highway, I've seen the field has been mowed level, there's a Bobcat machine working out there, flags in the ground, some new looking young trees, and construction and landscaping activity at the old homes / barn.

What's happening?
