Tech Bench / Paint repair
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:30:23 PM »
Any suggestions for what to do to repair a spot where the paint chipped off?  Its down to bare metal (aluminum) and is about 1/4 - 1/2 the size of a penny.  Or should I not even worry about it?

Tech Bench / Cutting handle bars

Are there any special points to know about cutting handle bars to a shorter length, or can I just grab a hacksaw and go at it?

Buy, Sell, Trade / Trek 2012 Top Fuel 8, sans frame
« on: February 18, 2017, 09:11:58 AM »
This was a showroom Trek Top Fuel 8, 2012 model, bought new in 2013.  Selling everything except the frame, seat, and pedals:

26" wheels, fork, shocks (full suspension), brakes, cranks, derailleur hangers (three-one new, two used), swing arm, shifters, derailleurs etc.
Tires are tubeless ready and are currently set up as tubeless.  If you prefer riding tubed tires I have three tubes, one of which is brand new and unused.

$125 for everything or make an offer for any of the parts.

Tech Bench / 1X gearing
« on: January 02, 2017, 01:23:09 PM »
My bike currently has a 1X11 setup: a SRAM GX 1000, 32T X-Sync crank and a SRAM XG-1150, 10-42, 11 speed cassette.  I like the range of gears, but I would like more on the lower end, and don't need what I currently have on the high end.  Thus I would like to shift the whole range of gears downward.

SRAM offers a 30T crankset for this setup.  Will going from a 32T to a 30T make much of a difference?  Is it relatively easy or inexpensive to switch out the crankset?

On this page:  https://www.sram.com/sram/mountain/family/gx   it looks like there is a direct mount chainring that offers more on the lower end (26 or 28, as well as the 30), but I don't understand how the chainring works with the crankset in a 1X setup.

Thanks

Tech Bench / Kona bikes / Trek Bikes
« on: October 06, 2016, 08:54:35 PM »
I'm thinking of getting a new bike.  Things I want are full suspension, dropper post, 1x10 or 1x11, 27.5 or 26" wheels, good components, but I don't race and don't care about paying more just to save a few ounces of weight--quality, performance and durability are much more important.

Someone suggested looking at Kona, specifically the Kona Process 153.  Anyone familiar with Kona?  Comments, complaints, insights?

Thanks!

Yellowwood State Forest / Trail Status button
« on: September 11, 2016, 10:44:19 PM »
Will there eventually be a Trail Status button for Yellowwood as there is for the other trail systems, or is it understood to be the same as, or a day or two behind, BCSP?

HMBA Website Suggestions, Comments, etc. / Avatar?
« on: July 10, 2016, 11:33:53 PM »
Is it no longer possible to upload an avatar?  I intentionally deleted an old work website and as I clicked 'Change Profile' I noticed that the 'No Avatar' radio button was also selected, apparently by default, since I had not clicked on it.  I tried to go back and upload an avatar, but there is no option to do that.  The only choice under 'Personalized Picture' is the No Avatar button which it seems is selected by default and can't be unselected.

Thanks for any help.

Find a Ride / Ashville and Pisgah
« on: May 28, 2016, 03:23:04 PM »
I'm headed to Ashville North Carolina in mid-June and will have about a half day to do some riding.  Any recommendations for what to try out there?  How far is Pisgah from Ashville?  Difficulty in comparison to BCSP?   Thanks!

Tech Bench / dropper posts
« on: April 30, 2016, 11:10:34 AM »
I am thinking of getting a dropper post and wondered what people's experience has been with various makes and models.  Durability, functionality, etc......

One that got great reviews was from 9Point8 (I think it was called the 'Fall Line'), but the company seems relatively new.

Also, some are infinitely adjustable, some have three positions that click into place.  Are there dis/advantages of one over the other?

Thanks!

Tech Bench / hitch mounted bike rack
« on: June 15, 2015, 12:07:29 PM »
I currently have a Thule 990xt Doubletrack bike rack, and I like the way it folds up and out of the way.  But, the front tire turns in the tray on longer drives and I worry about the cinch strap breaking and the bike falling off the rack.

I used to have a Swagman xc2 that had wire loops that the tires sat in and never had a problem.

Is there a hitch mounted rack that has a loop type tray for the wheels (like the Swagman xc2) but folds up close to the rear of the vehicle like the Thule Doubletrack?

Thanks!

Trail Design, Construction, and Maintenance / User impact on trails
« on: May 28, 2015, 07:29:12 AM »
I am having a discussion with some folks regarding the impact on trails of hiking vs biking.  Can anyone suggest some good resources to research this?

How about resources for responsible, sustainable trail building and maintenance?

Thanks!

Brown County State Park / Extra MTB Fees
« on: May 11, 2015, 08:32:24 AM »
On 5/8/2015 I received an email from Andy Williamson / IMBA regarding proposed fees for mtb access to trails in all Indiana State Parks.  The email states:
Quote
....state park permits, passes and fees will be increased starting May 13, 2015. Indiana residents that currently pay $40 for an annual pass will now pay $70 to ride, out-of-state riders would have to pay $90 for an annual pass.
(sorry for the big font, the quote was copied and pasted from the email)

I am guessing that the $70 is broken down as $40 for the annual pass plus an additional $30 for the (proposed) mtb permit for in-state riders.  I am not sure what the breakdown is for the $90 for out-of-state riders.

What are the current and proposed gate fees for one-time use of BCSP?  And what is the proposed permit / fee for one-time mtb use?

This Staurday I went in the west entrance of BCSP and, when the attendent saw my bike, was told that there was a trail run (Dances with Dirt) taking place that was using parts of the mtb trail system.  The attendent went on to say that mtb'ers were 'great' and were the best users of the park.  He noted that they built trails, maintained trails, and were generally very repectful of other users of the trail.  That's a good reputation to have.

The IMBA email provided this link to find your state legislature's contact info:

https://iga.in.gov/legislative/2014/legislators/?utm_campaign=website&utm_source=sendgrid.com&utm_medium=email

It urged riders to contact their legislator BEFORE May 19th.

Anyone know more about this?  Is there a template somewhere for emails so that mtb'ers comments are consistent and to the point?

Thanks.
