Brown County State Park / Re: Fall Riding for my first time ........
« on: October 26, 2012, 10:48:13 AM »
Ok, I decided to go ahead and admit it.  I wrecked yesterday on North Gate about 30-40 yards from North Tower.  Yeah, I know, nobody wrecks there.  This was the first time I ever rode with leaf cover on the ground.  I got a little off line and hit a root sideways that was hidden under everything and over the handlebars I went.  In hindsight, I was riding too relaxed and not prepared for the bike to get a little unstable in that area.  I guess I did not learn my lesson quick enough, because I did the same thing on an even easier section of trail on North Tower.  After that, I got things figured out a little better and had a good ride on Green Valley and Aynes.  The first wreck hurt and the second wreck was just comical.  My wrist and a couple of fingers on my left hand are really sore and stiff today.  It is almost impossible for me to grip anything with that hand right now.  It did not bother me for the next couple of hours when I was riding, but started to stiffen up on the drive home.  The lessons learned for me were NONSTOP focus is required when the ground is covered with leaves and expect to ride noticeably slower.

Signed up for my first BCB on Monday night.  We just got our first mountain bikes in June and love it.  My wife is not ready for 25 miles yet, so she is signed up to work HP Sunday morning.  Looking forward to it!

Is the ride still starting at 6:45?  Sherri and I will be there if one of us does not have to work late.

I'd like to propose a junker bike division,  you can race on any bike you like,  but at anytime anyone can buy your bike for $300  that would keep costs down.

Spent some time at the horsetrack watching the claiming races?

To the poster who wasnt going to bring her son I strongly recommend that you do.  The group is great they watched out for him and gave him tons of tips (as well as me) and by the end of the night he was having a blast.  My son is only 14.  We are also beginners.  Again thanks group.

Agree that she should bring her son.  My wife was really struggling and found this to be a great group to help her out.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to join this week or next.  Hope to get back out there in a couple of weeks to join all of you.

Sherri and I won't be able to make it this week.  We hope to join everyone next week.

Glad I got a chance to join everyone.  Sherri seems to be getting a lot out of it and is excited by her progress.  Hopefully we will be able to make it next Tuesday.

Sherri is planning to make it out tonight, assuming no late afternoon surprise projects come up at work.  My bike is loaded up in the truck also.  I am not sure if I can get there in time to start with you guys, but maybe I can stumble onto the group quickly if I am late.

Thanks everyone for taking good care of Sherri.  She had a blast and is looking forward to the next time she gets a chance to join all of you.  Hopefully I can fit it into my schedule soon too.

My wife was thinking about joining the ride this week.  Is it still at 6:30?

Harmonie State Park / Re: Which trails are available?

Finally made it out there this evening for a nice ride.  I liked the trails a lot.  I really miss the old Wabash River bridge.  It turns what used to be a 30 minute drive into a 45 minute trip.  My parents and nieces went along for the ride also.  The 14 year old took a ten mile road ride while I was in the woods.  When we were done biking, she decided we also needed to take a short one mile run to finish ourselves off.  We took off from the Sycamore bail out area where the sign warns that the rest of the loop might not be appropriate for beginners.  As a trail runner also, I can say that the trail is excellent for that purpose too.  A good time was had and I am looking forward to a return visit the next time I visit family in Illinois.

That does help.  I see that Sycamore Ridge is in the southern part of the park.  I still have another two questions though.  Are the two mountain bike trails part of the seven trails listed in the brochure, or are they not shown?  Also, is Sycamore ridden in both directions?  Thanks.

I have family in southeastern Illinois and will be visiting either this weekend or sometime in the next few weeks.  I was thinking about taking my bike down since Harmonie State Park is less than an hour from my parents house.  When looking at the brochure map, I see that 7 trails are listed.  Are all of these available for mountain biking?  Also, where is the preferred parking spot(s)?  Thanks.

This is pretty straight forward, so if you already knew about it and tried it no insult meant.  Have you loosened the quick release lever on the back wheel and made sure the wheel was still all the way in the dropouts and not sitting crooked in the dropouts?  If you have the bike standing up you can just loosen the quick release skewer and tighten it that should make sure the wheel is centered still.

I am way too new to this to be insulted.  I am clueless about basic little things to try at this point.  It did not really matter last night since there was less than 30 minutes left before dark and it was a very short hike back to the truck.  I also realized the thumb took a big enough hit that I should call it a day and not risk further injury.  I honestly just put the bike in the truck and headed home.  I have not even attempted to look at it myself yet.
