O'Bannon Woods State Park / Re: AHT report?
« on: August 15, 2012, 07:29:16 AM »
well, i answered my own question...went and did the southeast portion of the aht...parked at the river and did the road back up to the trail, went counter clockwise toward cold friday road and then on around to old forest road...while the trail itself is a backcountry blast, i would never suggest doing it this time of year...there were at least two areas with multiple downed trees where the undergrowth has taken over...i am nothing but thorn scratches, chiggers, and poison ivy from the waist down...in addition to that the deer ticks were horrible...i thought i had gotten them all but the morning after i found 3 hangin on and gettin fat...my advice would be to leave the aht alone til winter...

Tech Bench / Re: Knee Protection?
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:00:42 AM »
i wear the full on knee and shins by 661...mine are at least 5 years old and going strong...there's absolutely no shame in wearing them, or shouldn't be...i get the same questions about them as i do my bike:  you don't need that in indiana...my response is always that i may not need it but i sure as hell want it...i also have a smaller pair of just knee pads that triple got from qbp...i think they're pro-tec, and i'll be adding elbow pads from them here soon...one tip, is to get them and break them in during hot weather...sweating them in will get them comfortable much quicker, although be prepared to itch and bitch the first few rides...i don't even notice them now...

o'bannon has more potential than anything in the state...the new section of firetower that connects down to the group camp is the portion that i would define as more difficult than walnut (maybe)...that said, it's funner'n a sack o kittens...don't ignore the AHT...there is hike-a-bike but you get the backwoods feel...i like to start with a section of the AHT:  park at a road intersection (any of them), ride the next portion, then go back to the car a la pavement (i like the areas down near the river)...then drive to the firetower and finish the day with firetower and rocky ridge...alternative is to start at the north end of the AHT where it intersects 462 and ride counterclockwise to intersect the firetower trail...do that and rocky ridge then slog back on the AHT or take pavement (a pretty fast downhill that way, tuck and roll)...

from what i've heard the ketchum/hailey/sun valley area is much smoother with better flow and overall higher speeds...the stanley area is more "hate your life to the top, gotta stop to rest the arms a couple times on the way down"...i have heard really good things about punchline, though haven't ridden it...

sweet, thanks!...i'll be heading into town fairly early, would like to ride late morning, early afternoon...then have time to clean up and feed up before the show...i'll give you a ring...i'll prolly hit devou, parking at the olympic park at 3rd and vine, then just ride across the bridge and to the park...get some dirt and urban all in one...followed up by some parking lot slumming...

skip sun valley, go over galena pass to stanley...do the little and big casino creek ride...9.5 miles up, considerable hike a bike at the top but it's worth it...then 10.5 back down...watch out for boiling brake fluid...we've done the ride in anywhere from 5-6 hours up to almost 10 if you get lost...i'm pretty sure we go up little casino and down big, but just to make sure ask the local boys at the coffee trailer in the morning...i'd rate this one definitely above intermediate...

the filters at either end of schooner are an exaggeration meant to make u think twice...and they do...but if you want to forget that you're in indiana then ride it...there will always be hike sections from one direction or the other, though they can all be cleaned from the downhill direction...you may want a spotter to keep you from landing 50 feet down slope though ;)
