HMBA Forum News and Information / Tapatalk not working
« on: May 31, 2014, 09:18:33 AM »
I apologize to the tapatalk users among you (I am one), but it appears the plugin isn't working correctly.

I did an update recently and it looks like the update reset permissions of the plugin folder.  I seem to recall having to call the hosting provider when I first set up this plugin because they have some automatic settings that need overridden.  I haven't had the time to call them to get this fixed in the past couple of days.

I'll get to it when I can and get it back up and running.

Advocacy / Kiosk signage

I saw this pic of some kiosk signage and I think the bit about the dollars and hours is a fantastic idea.  It tells people who works on the trails, and it shows them how much is invested in them.

General Trail Information / HMBA Trail Guide Improvements
« on: April 16, 2014, 11:47:43 AM »
Just a tip to you guys.  I made some small improvements to the Trail Guide details pages for the trails already listed.

I was bored at work and poked around on Accuweather's page a bit.  They employed a sneaky tactic to prevent hotlinking of their detailed 24 hour precipitation map that covered Indiana and small parts of our neighboring states.  I dug through the code and found the URL I needed.

I was able to update the 24 hour precipitation map images on our Trail Guide Pages to reflect a LOT more detail than the old one.

I have some more updates on tap for this year for the Trail Guide that should make it a lot more useful to folks.  I'm going to add more trail detail pages as I complete MTB Project listings for them.  If you use a mobile phone, download the MTB Project app for maps and directions.  I am also going to see about adding trails themselves to the overview map at specific zoom levels to avoid cluttering the map too much.

I have also been working on a trail rating system for use in the Trail Guide.  Stay tuned for that improvement, also.  If you have particular skills that might help with some of these projects, let me know.

What I could use:

People who understand GPS use who can help me get detailed trail data, including geotagged photos.  If you can't geotag them yourself, but have a GPS and a digital camera, I can talk you through what you need to do to collect the data I need.  A phone with GPS is probably not going to cut it for what I need.  I've tried to use data from a phone last year, and it was flaky at best.  Some data was good, but some of it was worse than useless.

Over the winter, I got my hands on the DNR's Trail Inventory so I have GPS data for many mtb trails (not all).  The file is somewhat old, though, and missing some data.  I need help making sure the data is current and accurate.

People with solid writing skills who know trails I don't have detailed listings for.  I don't HAVE to be the only person submitting trails to MTBProject.  I can help get the trail data in the right format for submission and you can create the detailed listings.  Anyone with geotagged photos can submit them to existing trail listings, also.

I could use folks with coding experience, too.  I have ideas about how I'd like the trail rating system to work.  I would like for each detailed trail page to have a short survey for that trail.  It would ask for information that the MTB Project page does not provide.  For example, I want a similar sort of "star" rating system that covers overall trail quality (indicative of how worthwhile a trail is to travel for a visit).  But I want details, too, like one for how technical the trail is, a rating for climbing difficulty, etc.  I put together some simple images that would be used as indicators of survey results.  I also envision a "trail type" sort of system.  I would have icons for "groomed park cross country trails", "flow trails", "ungroomed backcountry trails", "fire roads", "technical downhill", and "bike park" icons.  Basically those icons would be used on the detailed trail guide pages to indicate the type of riding each destination offers.  BCSP, for example would get an icon for "groomed park cross country trails" currently, and would add an icon for "flow trails" when Hobbs Hollow is done.  SWW would get "groomed park cross country trails", "flow trails", and "technical downhill" when that trail is done.  Nebo Ridge would be "ungroomed backcountry trails".  And so on.  I haven't made those icons yet, so someone with some graphic design skills would be really helpful to make those and maybe even revise the star icons I have already made.

Also utilizing coding expertise, what I want to do with the Google overview map may not be possible with the way I currently display the overview map.  I feed it into an external site for processing a .kml file and displays the map on our site.  We may need to implement the Google Maps API independently on our own site.  It's not too difficult in and of itself, but with the way Wordpress' template files are segmented all to hell, that would make it a lot more complicated.

Rants and Raves / MTB Park in Fishers

A new professionally-built mtb park is coming to Fishers in the next year or two east of Geist.  It's being built on 80 acres of farmland, but they're moving in a bunch of dirt to build a big hill even now.  Extensive reforestation.  "Progressive" trails.  Are we talking about a skills park here?

Find a Trail / HMBA Trail Guide Updates
« on: February 22, 2014, 02:54:38 PM »
I added some trails to the HMBA Trail Guide overview map this afternoon.http://www.hmba.org/wp/trail-guide/I marked a few more trails down in the Evansville area, and added a trail outside the state - Kickapoo in IL.  I saw it on the DINO calendar and figured it'd be wise to add it to the map.  Over time, I may add more outside the state, especially those near the border around Louisville, and maybe Cincy.

Club News / The HMBA Calendar is filling up!
« on: February 22, 2014, 01:38:07 PM »
Check out the HMBA Calendar for mtb events coming up in 2014.

http://www.hmba.org/wp/calendar/

We have races from the Sub-9 series of events, the Kenda DINO race series, and the new Southern 5 race series.  There are events covering Bike Week, Bike to Work Day, and the upcoming Subaru IMBA Trail Care Crew visit the same week.

We've had the series of Town Run Night Rides for the winter, a couple of work sessions at O'Bannon, and a Giant Bicycles demo event at Southwestway.

I'd love to see more trail work events and group rides advertised in the calendar, so if you're planning something, let me know and I can hook you up with access to add events to the HMBA Calendar.

If you haven't been paying attention, the new HMBA site is LIVE!  Included is a real functioning calendar that uses Google Calendars.  I am the owner of said calendar, but I want it to be a community sourced thing with lots of folks contributing all over the state.  I've got a couple people in Indy contributing activities for the city, and someone from O'Bannon. If you organize a race series anywhere, even if it's just a single event, I'd love to see it get listed on the HMBA calendar.  It really would help folks to see how many mtb activities are going on across the state.  It would also help trail work organizers to work around various race schedules, and help park visitors to work around race events.

All I need is a "yeah, I'll contribute" and an e-mail address via private message, and I'll send you an invitation to be a contributor to the calendar.

HMBA Forum News and Information / Embedding FAQ
« on: January 31, 2014, 12:38:48 PM »
I have implemented a couple of functional improvements to the forum lately.

First is a fix of an annoying problem we had for awhile.

The forum used to freak out if you tried to embed too many images in a post.  I'm not sure how it behaved for others, but for me, if I tried to embed more than one image using the BBCode Flickr supplied, I would get a 403 error AND a 404 error.  Very irritating.  That one was due to some host settings.  I contacted our hosting provider about it yesterday, they flipped some switches, and now that problem appears to be gone.  Feel free to add lots of pics to your posts now.  If you have the URL to an image location, you can also insert it using the image icon in the 2nd row, 3rd from the left.  Just page the URL into the dialog box.

Edit 3/3/2015: The old video embed code was broken. No worky no mo. Some older video embeds will look funny with the extra code. I installed a new one that should be simpler for you all.

It works this way: Just paste the link. The plugin will do the embedding work. If you are accessing the forum with https://,  (I have a request out to the developer to get a better fix), Youtube links will throw browser security warnings. Firefox and Chrome show a gray shield up in the URL bar (Firefox is to the left of the URL, Chrome is on the right), while MSIE gives you a written warning at the bottom of the browser window that's easy to find and understand. Vimeo links don't appear to cause any problems. If youtube vids don't cause security warnings for you, be happy.

Here is a link to the plugin website with a list of video websites that are supported. It's a LONG list. Yup, PinkBike vids also work.
