Tech Bench / Looking for Nutserts/Rivnut for bottle mounts
« on: June 10, 2019, 11:25:20 AM »
I might only use this a few times, so I thought I'd put out a calling for use of someone's Rivnut tool and some extra nutserts they might have laying around. I'm drilling an old steel frame for mounts.  Extra karma points if you can help a fellow rider out!! I'm in Carmel/north side of Indy. PM if you can assist

Tech Bench / Re: Clipless or platforms
« on: January 20, 2016, 06:24:43 PM »
I used platforms with clips for years and converted to egg beaters.  I'm putting the platforms w/ clips back on my cruiser bike so I can ride with boots in winter and putzin around without wearing cycling shoes.  My next cycling shoe purchase will be some sandals.

Tech Bench / Re: Light Touring Disc Wheelset
« on: December 10, 2015, 08:19:59 PM »
I recently went through the same purchase, looking for a new disc wheelset.  The problem I had was that my aluminum frame has 130mm rear dropout spacing, which reduced my options.  I ended up buying an Aeromax wheelset which has sealed bearings, bladed spokes, disc specific rim and weighed in at 1750g, which seemed to be on par for non-carbon wheelsets.  The really light wheelsets I saw were 1400g and hefty were above 2000g.  The Aeromax wheels spin WAY smoother than my old loose bearing wheelset and I dropped almost a pound of rotating mass.  I've only taken a short ride so far, but thus far I'm happy with the Aeromax wheels.  Time will tell if these will be durable or not.

But this is about your needs for touring and commuting.  I'd say go for a wheelset with:
Tubeless ready (a perk but not mandatory as any modern rim is pretty much up to tubeless after some tweaking)
Keep your eye out for take-offs from high end bikes - you might find a bargain within budget
Rim and tire widths are trending wider for road now, so don't worry too much about getting a narrow rim.

Since you already have a working XT wheelset, get some lighter tubeless tires (road or cx) and try to set up your XTs tubeless.  You'll be rolling lighter and have some tubeless insurance.  Put the opposite type of tire (road or cx) on your new wheelset.  Then swap out wheelsets for the ride you are doing that day.

Good luck on your hunt!

The hearts of the mountain bike community in Indy and all over the globe go out to Justin's family and loved ones.  While the media has focused on his philanthropy, he was also a secondary advocate for mountain biking by enjoying our sport when he wasn't working or spending time with family.  I think many, if not most of us, can relate.

Town Run / Re: 2015 Town Run Trimming and Weedwacking Thread
« on: May 31, 2015, 07:18:59 PM »
Thanks jsommer!  I'm the person who trimmed last week and basically went the reverse route you did.  I didn't use a gas trimmer, so I'm sure we hit different spots.

I pruned and mowed the short track trail today from 9-12.  I worked through the entire course and it should be ready once we get a yellow or green.  I feel a little guilty for doing this work during a Red day, but figured the short track wasn't rideable prior to today anyway.  The surface is definitely slimy and saturated in spots, so please don't ride until thoroughly dried.

Town Run / Re: First A frame Wood Feature
« on: May 22, 2015, 11:33:40 PM »
I had a separated ac joint on the second A frame feature @4 years ago.  The trail leading to and exiting the feature is slightly off center and I hit it off center with my front wheel landing to the left of the structure and my back wheel on the structure.  I taco'd my front wheel and plowed straight down into the ground with a major endo.  Would a look at the angles of entry and exit to attempt a more straight-on trajectory reduce the chances of injury?  Maybe.  I manually adjust my angles today, against the flow of the trail.

I feel like the first A frame is fine, but I don't hit it anymore, because I can't afford to hurt myself if I make a stupid mistake or if for some reason the structure isn't the same as the previous time I hit it.

Tech Bench / Re: 26 inch wheel adivce
« on: February 03, 2015, 09:15:04 PM »
Go to the CIBA swap this Sunday.  There are bound to be some race xc 26er wheelsets from those who have recently gone 29er and just want to get rid of their good, but old stuff.  You will probably see take-offs, (new, unused/lightly used) at the swap too.  You should be able to find a decent wheelset for @ $100-$150 or less depending on your haggling skills.  If your budget is $300, then attempt to get 2 wheelsets and tubeless tires for different conditions (ultralight hardpack and a knobby more durable set).

River Road Park/Hazel Dell Landing Park / Re: Trail Conditions
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:22:37 PM »
River Road Park is now green. The stinging nettles have been cut back.  The surface is somewhat soft... probably because of the somewhat low traffic this trail gets.

Find a Trail / Re: If you only had one trail to ride...

If you are moving somewhere that has some nice mountainous views and trails to match and are out riding with people who ask you about where you've been the last few years... tell them Indiana.  Then when they chuckle about Indiana not having true mountain biking, just shrug it off and smoke 'em in the twisties.

I hate to drag this out, but will...   What front gear is optimal for CX around here?  I'm guessing that the NW is just as popular with that crowd, but more available with a 104 crank pattern?

Rants and Raves / Argument for Helmet Mounted GoPro

Don't forget to move your handlebar mounted GoPro to your helmet prior to your next ride through bandit country.

Town Run / Re: Town Run Closed for flooding May 14th

What is the forecast for opening the short track by Wednesday evening's session?  I'm willing to go out and mow it if we can do the race.
