Southwestway Park / Re: 2018 SWW Trail Conditions and Issues

I'd like to meet up with some leaders for this park to get trained up and certified for trail work.
I've already been out once with my chainsaw to clear around 10 trees after the windstorm, and I plan to go out again soon to clear up this next round.
I'd love to do it with the blessing of and under the guise of the HMBA, but still haven't heard back from anyone about getting started.

I will PM you and Paul about HMBA chainsaw certification. While we greatly appreciate the help with clearing the fallen trees at SWW, please do not use a chainsaw at SWW or any HMBA maintained trail system till you can get a HMBA Safety certification. This certification is a requirement that will protect you and HMBA if you or anyone get injured as a result of your chainsaw use.

I normally lead volunteer work at SWW, and I and a couple of other regular volunteers have the chainsaw training. I have been very busy lately with work and school commitments, so it has been challenging to keep up with any maintenance there.

Session last week went well. We cleared back a section of legacy trail that typically is used for the DINO SWW race, and weedeated sections of Lenape. Also did a repair on the sagging bench cut by the north picnic tables. Eric Burke, Ted Kissell, David Riggleman and Greg Bernath put in two solid hours of work. Thanks!

Tomorrow we will primarily work on clearing four low hanging and precariously perched trees on Lenape. If anyone brings a weedeater we can put you to work on the east Mann Hill feeder trail. That porr little section doesn't get much love.

600pm meet at upper parking lot by red Dodge Dakota.

The trails have held up well but some work still remains. We will be weedeating, repairing the sagging bench cut by the north picnic tables, trash pickup, and clearing sketchy trees. If you have a sturdy gas powered weedeater, or a weed whip, please bring! Any other tools will be provided.
Wear good tough shoes and if possible wear long pants and shirt sleeves if weedeating. I will have bottled water available. Post up any questions. Meet at the upper parking lot and look for red Ford Escape (aka the War Wagon). I will have volunteer sign in sheets and waiver to track hours contributed.
Racers who be riding the DINO SWW race in August are very welcome to help prep the course! ;)

Updated MTB Project this morning. In a nutshell, Mann Hill trails and Upper Cottonwood 99% dry, Lenape solid Yellow with wet in all the usual seeping spots. Entire river bottom is underwater, Lower Cottonwood and the low area around the #10 Boy Scout bridge are underwater.

Unfortunately, not to anyone's surprise, with all the rain expected and recent snowmelt the trails will be way too soft. so RED conditions expected for the next week or so.  :'(

After the Big Thaw of 2018, we have another freeze! Should be good to go all next week. MTB Project status changed to GREEN (but should be BLUE for freeze/Thaw)

The new year is here!

Currently thawing out from the Big Freeze of 2018. Trails will be unrideable/unuseable all week. Please stay off. We can't close the park to keep people off the trials, but consider the trails unofficially closed. MTB Project has been updated.

Wow, sorry to hear about that. I an't say that I've ever seen anyone looking like you described. Certainly seems like a one-off situation (We hope). Maybe a misguided sense of duty.

We've had sunshine and no rain for 24 hours now. Mann Hill trails and those south of the upper parking lot should be OK, except the lower trails on the river bottom and south.

Lenape will still be wet, so it's best to wait till later this afternoon to ride, and then be prepared to bail if they are too wet and soft.

The bench cut near the north picnic tables has collapsed more, so please stay off, lest you slide off and land in the Fen below. We'll have a work session Wednesday to work on repairing it.

Well, spoke too soon. We have had so much rain it will take many days for it to dry out after it stops raining. When it was dry, the top layer of trail tread that was dry and hardpacked was only about an inch thick. Now with all the soaking rain, the tread will be soft again. RED conditions prevail for the next several days.

If it lets up any on Saturday, we may have an impromptu work session to walk parts of Lenape to clear more drains and fix mudholes.

Considering it's been raining so much lately, the trails are in amazingly great shape! Mostly yellow conditions. Upper trails will be drier than lower ones. The river bottom is flooded.

I was able to do about 45 minutes of trail maintenance tonight cutting back some of the early growth along the gravel path by lenape.

Thank you Dennis!
