O'Bannon Woods State Park / Re: AHT report?
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:11:04 PM »
My helmet is off to you guys willing to ride the AHT.  I just spent the weekend backpacking the trail in it's entirety, thinking about riding it.  I couldn't imagine riding large portions because I could barely find the trail markers for the leaves! My dog got pretty good at following previous hikers scent, so I trusted her after a while.  Between the greenbriars, raspberry bushes, tall grass, downed trees, and loose rocks on the ascents and descents, this seems to be much better suited to hiking than biking for me.  The shelters/cabins reminded me of the AT, and I will be back with friends to hike at least portions again.

I totally agree with visiting WW again.  There were some bad posts about the condition of the 10 mile loop earlier this year, but it is very ridable now.  A friend and I made the drive, from the east side of Indy, out to the park today.  There were only 2 other cars, riders out, and the woods seemed to hold some of the cool morning air well into the afternoon.  Expect lots of exposed roots and gravel in lots of the turns.  Can you commit to more than one loop at a time?

Is this an annual trip?  Next year is open for me and I think I would like to join.

Fort Harrison State Park / Schoen Creek scenic trail

I'm not sure of the proper channels for a trail improvement.  While riding the other day with a friend, we were discussing some recent posts about the hopes for this trail, and the thought for pull-offs and benches came up.  Could there be some at the most scenic parts of the trail?  SWW has sponsers for their bridges, could that work here?  I could possibly get a crew of carpenters together to build a bench and bike support.   :-\

Racing...from the novice to seasoned / Re: Congats on your 24hr race

My team with Mantra comp, Hoosier Ben and Tim M. finished 18 laps with just about 20 minutes to spare. I'm proud of how we did even though we didn't finish in the money!
Thanks for the great event Brian.  Looks like you attracted almost 100 teams on a questionable weather weekend. Thanks to Hoosier Ben for the salute to our innocent fallen fellow Americans, on Sept. 11, 10 years ago.  Thanks to the trail builders for a durable, challenging, fun course.

Be thankful for SWW is right!  We had it then we didn't... I built a house down there and it was my home trail. Then got kicked out for the horses because we caused so much more erosion!  I have since moved east, and there are trails everywhere now!  If you don't like the other riders on the trail, too bad you can't change them, but you can pick another trail at least.  Life is too short... you are prolonging yours by riding.  Keep riding and don't worry about "them".

I rode GV from the parking lot twice last weekend, and took a friend and combined it with Aynes this weekend. GV is definitely the best intermediate rider trail in the park.  I wish it was my home trail. Riding this trail could be habit forming.

Hiking the trails gives you a much better opportunity to appreciate the beauty we normally charge through.  Training for a March hike in the Grand Canyon is a good reason to become more familuar with Mann Hill.
