Brown County State Park / Hobbs signage (at the bottom)
« on: May 21, 2019, 08:27:40 AM »
A buddy of mine who rides bikes a lot, but hasn't ridden BCSP a ton rode at the park this weekend. He said he rode Shelly trail from GV toward Hobbs and while carrying the bit of speed you gather at the very bottom of the Shelly trail went "straight" (rather than making the hard left to lower HP).
He said he got about 1/2 way up flow 2 of Hobbs when he realized he was going up Hobbs, at which point he turned around to get going the right direction.
My first though was 'how TF did you not know you were going toward Hobbs at the intersection??' Then as we got talking about it I realized that I know the trail system so well that I can't really make these sort of mistakes. But to someone who doesn't, this particular mistake could be very dangerous.
I asked "didn't you see the signage??" He said "once I got back down I saw it. It's a laminated paper thing on the ground. I was going fast enough it just made more sense to me to go straight than to make a hard left." (for the record, I've never paid attention to the signage there since I know the trail and know which way to go)...
It may be good for safety to have some sort of big red "X" (or something) sign there. Possibly something in the middle of the trail that you have to ride around that makes it very clear that you are going the wrong way.
Just a thought.

Brown County State Park / Personal music devices on trails??
« on: April 19, 2019, 10:39:06 AM »
Am I a crotchety old bastard that begrudgingly moved to bigger wheels, doesn't ride 4' wide bars and still wears lycra? Yes.
But what's with people using bluetooth speakers on the trials? Its crazy to me that people blast music on MTB trails. Late last season we were riding one evening and saw, I think, 13 or so people and counted 8 of them with bluetooth speakers broadcasting music. I've already started seeing (hearing...) them this year.
Is this the new normal? Am I the only one bothered by this?

Wapehani / Wapahani dam removal is complete...what now??
« on: December 04, 2018, 08:14:58 AM »
I spoke with someone from Bloomington Parks last week and he told me that the work at Wap is done and equipment was being moved out.
So what now?
I dont know what kind of $$ parks has for Wap, but I told him it would be awesome is they could get HMBA involved in rebuilding Wap and make a decent trail system/smaller scale "Griffin type" park that makes sense (if you've ridden Wap, you know the trail system just doesn't really make sense).
I'd love to see this place be made awesome by people who know how to build good sustainable trails!

General Trail Information / Why isn't Ski World a MTB park?

Surely I'm not the only person who drools every time I drive past ski world...

Wapehani / Dam Removal at Wap
« on: October 31, 2017, 08:43:04 AM »

I'm not sure what the 20' high 400' long dam is out there, but things are ging to change. This could be a great opportunity to Make Wapahani Great Again! Maybe a big pump track!
Hopefully this project doesn't end Wap for good...

Other - Central/South / Fairfax SRA trail?
« on: June 13, 2017, 08:00:57 AM »
I have heard from a couple people that there is a plan to build trail in the Fairfax SRA on Monroe Lake just outside of Bloomington. Anyone know if this is true or anything about it?

Yellowwood State Forest / Miller logging

Does anyone know how much longer they'll be logging Miller Ridge (and/or that area)?

General Trail Information / Passes, no passes, gate fees...
« on: August 09, 2016, 10:09:53 AM »
As a bicycle retailer I will say that it is pretty confusing trying to explain to a customer what is required to ride the bike they just bought.
Want to check out Yellowwood? No pass required. But if you get into HNF, HNF trail tag required.
BCSP? You have to pay a gate fee, AND have a state park ride pass, but only if you're on certain trails. "But that pass work for all IN state parks???" "so I use THAT pass for Yellowwood?" "No, no, that's a state FOREST, not state PARK, no pass needed there." "Oh okay, 'forest,' so the HNF tag works there?" "No, that's NATIONAL forest, not STATE forest..."

I think this should be made "easier." I have a friend from out of state but that is in IN frequently for work and makes fun of "us" for this.

Or maybe HNF could get some $$ from the park trail passes to produce some sort of color-coded map of the state indicating what is needed where.

Brown County State Park / Does Bobcat connect back into Aynes yet?

I was hesitant to start up and have to turn back around so I just took the fire road.

Yellowwood State Forest / Really dug the trails here
« on: April 07, 2016, 08:51:55 AM »
We rode the yellowwood trail this past weekend. I was impressed with how good the built trails are! I definitely preferred the "Miller" side to the "Bartley" side, but it was a good system overall!
And 20minutes from my house!

General Trail Information / E-bikes
« on: March 27, 2016, 08:40:14 PM »
If this topic has been beat to death here already, I apologize. But I'm 90% sure I saw an E-bike on the trail today. What's HMBA's position on this? Or does it have one?

Racing...from the novice to seasoned / Cat 1 MTB start question
« on: January 04, 2013, 08:42:36 AM »
Curious to get other Cat 1's opinion(s): Would you rather all start together, rather than being scored with people you don't start with?

Muscatatuck Trails / Muscatatuck being sold?
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:55:31 PM »
I think I heard that Muscatatuck park is being sold or something. Does anyone know anything about this? Or did I make it up? If so, what odes this mean for the trails and the park in general?

Wapehani / WUSSS
« on: November 18, 2011, 10:26:19 AM »
Would there be any interest in Wapahani Underground Summer Short-track Series (WUSSS)? Maybe like every other Wed eve through the summer do some sort of low-key short track race. I have kicked around this idea for years, but that's about it. I think there's enough trail that connects to the gravel lot that a few different courses could be used that would included the parking lot every lap.
Would people be interested in this at all?
