Find a Trail / Red River Gorge
« on: August 05, 2018, 03:24:32 PM »
Anyone familiar with the trails in Red River Gorge in Kentucky?  I'll be near the intersection of Brett Combs Mt. Parkway and SR 77.

Thanks!

Tech Bench / Flats--
« on: May 19, 2018, 06:12:19 PM »
I currently have a pair of Truvativ platform pedals and am thinking of changing to something else.  My preference is for something a little lighter and a little thinner, but with the same grip and similarly thin pins.

Suggestions, favorites, comments?

Thanks!

Buy, Sell, Trade / Lake 11.5 clipless shoes, free
« on: February 10, 2018, 10:53:28 AM »
I found a pair of Lake clipless shoes, size 11.5, decent condition some time ago, at the HP overlook.  I put a post on the forum, didn't get a response, gave them to a neighbor to try, but he is now riding flats, and gave them back. Free to anyone who can use them and will commit to a few hours of trail work.  Well, maybe not completely free, but a reasonable trade.

Events / 21017 Epic, maps and route info
« on: October 03, 2017, 12:58:50 PM »
The route for the 2017 Epic is listed both on Bike Reg -- https://www.bikereg.com/brown-county-epic-mountain-bike-festival -- (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page) and on the MTB Project mobile app.

But --and someone correct me if I'm wrong about this-- the mobile app  contains minimal directional arrows to tell you which trails to take in which direction.  The directional arrows for the entire route are only on the map on Bike Reg (the hyperlink above), which can be downloaded and printed.

Also, the mobile app does not contain the location of the SAG stations, nor does it clearly show and have all of the names of the (usually abandoned) roads in the more remote areas.  There will be signage along the way, but it is strongly recommended that you take both the paper map and a mobile device with the latest version of the Indiana trails on MTB Project.  Note that the app doesn't update automatically.  If you loaded it more than a week ago, then delete the Indiana trail list that is on your device now, then reload the Indiana trail list from the Areas section of the app.  And do this when you are sure you still have cell coverage.  Different carriers lose coverage throughout different parts of the trail system (and in some parts of the system all coverage is lost), but once the app is downloaded it uses GPS so you can see exactly where you are even if there is no cell coverage.

Finally, a question--I'm confused about what the paper map is trying to show for the outbound (red arrows) part of the Crooked Creek trails.  It looks like it wants you to go part way down CC north, then up the short exit to Miller Ridge, then back down CCDT2 to CC north, and then down to the lake.    Why the short little loop?

Tech Bench / flats vs. clipless
« on: August 11, 2017, 09:31:08 PM »
Any insights or opinions about the dis/advantages of riding flat-soled shoes vs. clipless?  I've read some articles, but just wondered what folks who ride in the mid-west think about them.

Thanks

Brown County State Park / Question For Tree Geeks
« on: May 13, 2017, 11:28:23 PM »
I've noticed, both at BCSP and in the area in general, pockets of trees that are just now putting out a flush of new leaves.  These trees look bare and don't yet have enough foliage to create any kind of canopy.  It seems that it is not species specific, but rather location dependent.  White oak, black/red oak, elm, hickory are all affected, from clusters of trees to one or more acres.  But it is only the taller trees, 25' and taller,  that are affected.  Below 20 or 25 feet the foliage looks just like the rest of the forest.  Ferns, seedlings, saplings, small trees are all full and open.

Any thoughts on what caused this?  Did pockets of cold air, heavy rain or hail kill or delay the first flush of leaves that started to open along with the rest of the forest?

Ash are late, thin or dead because of EAB, walnuts are always very late, and many beech are late this year.   But what about the others?
