Tech Bench / Winter Riding Gear
« on: January 04, 2013, 11:33:24 AM »
What is everyone using for winter riding gear? Can I use my skiing baselayers and be comfortable? I am just looking for others experiences. I want to get a decent setup so that I can try some winter rides, both on and off (when frozen) road.

Tech Bench / Converting to SS
« on: November 14, 2012, 11:31:57 AM »
I have a Salsa El Mariachi that I am ready to convert to SS. It already has adjustable dropouts so I have the chain tensioning figured out, but I am confused on what else I need.

I think I can remove the cassette, then add a single cog and some spacers to take care of the rear. Do I need to be looking for specifics on the cog and spacers other than tooth count?

For the crankset, I am really confused. Do I need a new crankset, or can I convert my 2x to a single? It is an FSA Comet which seems to have an odd BCD that doesn't match most SS specific chainrings (84 or 86mm and 3 hole). The current chainrings are 27 and 39.

I was planning to start with 32/16 or 32/17. I mainly ride BCSP. Is that a good place to start?

Brown County State Park / Route Distances?
« on: August 03, 2012, 02:36:06 PM »
I am trying to put together a ride for this weekend that is about 20 miles. I thought there used to be a map here that had the distances for the various loops.

Does something like that still exist?

So this is not directly racing related, but it is training related.

I was thinking I was in good shape for the Breakdown as I ride BCSP 10 miles every week throughout the year. I can usually complete whatever 10 mile route I pick for the day in a little under 2 hours. My average times are around 6 mph. I thought this was reasonable... until I ran the Breakdown and realized that I was at the very back of the pack.

So obviously I have a ton of room for improvement, but I am not sure what I should be doing to get my speed up. What are the best training regiments to use to increase my speed? I probably lose most of my time on climbs, so I am guessing I need to focus there, but again, anything specific that I should be doing? I will take any and all advice.

I want to make sure I have improved before next years Breakdown.

And just to be clear, I still had a blast, but I want to set a goal now for next year and work towards it.

Find a Trail / Good Trails in the Northwoods of WI?
« on: July 18, 2011, 02:18:09 PM »
I am headed on my yearly family vacation to the northwoods of Wisconsin, and my wife and I are planning to pack the bikes.

Does anybody know of some good trails to check out in that area? We stay in Boulder Junction, but I would travel to any surrounding areas (Manitowish, Eagle River, Minoqua, etc.)

Thanks for any ideas!
