I very got an 08 Gary Fisher Procaliber that I bought as a frame and built up. It's a XC bike, and I've made do with it for a few years, but always thought I'd be better off with more of a trail bike. This one is good and comfortable for long rides, but not really stable on steeper downhills, flow trails, and light jumps. Also is not good for rock gardens, which seem to be becoming more common on local trails. So for those who know me, I missed put all last year because of a broken neck, but plan on getting back on the trail this summer. The Stumpy is on Craigslist locally for $280, but obviously could probably get for less. My bike has a 120mm Marzocchi marathon fork, Shimano SLX hydraulic disk brakes, and a decent Shimano wheelset. It's also running 1x9. X-9 rear shifter and derailleur. I'm on a budget, so swapping everything over to a better trail frame is within my budget. A whole new bike is not.
First of all, thanks to everyone on this site I've met over the years, I haven't had to visit this part of the forum much anymore. I've gotten pretty good working on bikes. This thing has be stumped, though. I've run 1x9 on my mountainbike for a few years, so I'm a little rusty messing with a front derailleur. I'm tuning a coworkers bike up, and I've got everything set perfect, except the front derailleur. I've watched numerous videos, and read numerous how-tos, and can't get it to work properly. It's a Shimano Tiagra drivetrain on a flat bar road bike (with the trigger shifters) It will shift up all 3 gears fine, but jumps from the big ring all the way to the small one on downshifting. Took the cover of the shifter off, and there doesn't appear to be teeth worn or missing. Unhooked the cable from the derailleur, and with just hand tension on the cable, it seems to stop at the 2nd position. (This was kind of hard, as I only have two hands) I found a couple more little things to try tonight (loosen cable tension when in the small ring, and WD40 the inside of the shifter itself.) I'm wondering if the shifter is damaged, and I just can't see it. I'd hate to tell him he needs to buy a new shifter, and that not fix the problem.
I know some of you ride with more than one ring in front, so do you have any advice? Thanks in advance. I know he's going to be getting anxious to get his bike back working properly with these warmer days. unfortunately, he doesn't have ten bikes to choose from like I do.
I have a 24" GARY FISHER mountain bike that was given to me years ago by a member, who's name I've long forgotten. My daughter has ridden this everywhere from the neighborhood and local bike paths to the trails at southwestway and Brown County. She's outgrown it and I would like to pass it along to a kid in need. It's been a rock solid reliable bike and I've hardly had to do a thing to it. If you know a needy kid, who will take it out on the trails like mine did, I'd love to Give it to him or her. The tires are cracked from age, but I believe I have a better set I can swap over.
I have not been riding nearly as much as I'd like this year, but wondered if the regular Wed. night rides were happening? Looked down a couple pages on the forum and didn't see a post. I am going to try and get up there tonight.
I try not to play Mommy, but can't help but speak to people I see riding without a helmet. I'm polite, but try to convince them to get a helmet before riding the trails again. There were so many out today, I stopped trying...
In a dilemma. I was in the process of building up an older Trek M220 for my girl, when a Scott Scale Jr. popped up on Ebay. It is a very hard to find bike, and pretty much the top of the line as far as kids bikes. I was building this bike up with SRAM X9 9 speed drivetrain, and swapping the carbon handlebars and seatpost over from her little Hotrock. It's also going to have Avid SD brakes, and Bicycle Station in Columbus is rebuilding the wheelset with newer quick release hubs, and 1/2 the spokes. The Scott Spark is full suspension, and has mid-range components on it. Most guys who get them end up swapping the rear shock for an air shock, and swapping the mid-range Shimano drivetrain for better, lighter stuff too. I don't have the budget for that. I'd probably have $400 or so in either one in the end. Ugh! What to do???
I've messaged him a couple times about his bike he has for sale, and he hasn't responded. I'd rally like to check it out! If you know hime, can you have him check his PMs please? Thanks
Me and Getsometrail will be up at the Cleveland Ray's this weekend. Anyone else going to be there? Hook up with us if you're there. I'm on my silver and blue 08 Fary Fisher, and he's on a (I think?) gray 08 Giant Trance. My number is 317- four nine o - 1 seven seven five.
I have my regular steed. My 2008 Gary Fisher Procaliber 1x9 full suspension XC ride. Seems like it's overkill for Rays. I've got an 80's Schwinn Probe rigid that I'm making into a singlespeed. Wondering if it'd be more fun for Rays. Also thinking about picking up a cheap single speed dirt jumper or 24" BMX type bike. Heck. A regular 20" BMX bike might be more fun than my mountain bike. What do you all think?
Needed a winter project so I don't go crazy. Picked up an old steel lugged brazed Schwinn Probe mountain bike today at the flea market. Thinking I'm going to make a clunker/ beater out of it. I don't like the term "Ratbike" but that is kind of what it's going to be. It's black, and the stock paint is in good condition. I'll need to look into singlespeed conversion, or maybe just drop a couple rings in front and go 1x7 or whatever it has in the rear already. It needs brakes too, which I'll scrounge my parts bin for. Somebody put drop bars on it and tried making it into a rode bike? I want to use classic parts, but keep it fully functional, and on a budget.I'll snap some pics soon and update with a build thread. Anyone else done a clunker build, or restore / restomod an old bike? Please post pics for insperation.
I know we have a "[ost your rig" thread, but it has gotten long and buried deep in the forum. It also doesn't help that many of yor change bikes like I change my underwear. (weekly, at least) I'm horrible at putting names with usernames with bikes... Here's a thread to post you and your bike. If you frequent SWW post up here so we can all know who we're talking to or riding with on the trail. I'm going to try to get a good pic of myself and my bike tomorrow.
Getsometrail and I went SWW with our kids Sunday (ages 3-11) to show them the new loop. It's very kid friendly, and would be great to introduce your kid to mountainbiking. Video of our fun ride
It's a 1999 Schwinn Moab. In pretty much showroom condition. Guess this is still a very popular bike, and looks well equipped even by todays standards. The only thing she said about it is the "seat sucks". It's nice because it's coordinated to the bike, but it is hard as a rock. What seats do you women like? I know every butt is different. She's 5"-8" and will be about 130lbs once all the post-baby weight is back off. She doesn't have a boney butt, but doesn't have a lot of cushion either. LOL Hope that makes sense. I've got a WTB Pure V sitting in my spare parts box that is like new I'm going to let her try out. I have no problem spending some cash on a great seat if it means getting her out riding with us.
OK. If the rain stays away, it might be a good Wednesday to start this tradition back up again. I'm going to try to make it out this Wednesday. How about 6:00pm? Who's in?
