Anyone planning on doing the night race at SWW a week from Saturday? I know of a few singlespeeders that will be there. Should be an entertaining time!

French Lick Resort / First Time FL Questions
« on: April 23, 2013, 10:40:37 AM »
I am going to be at French Lick for a work retreat from Friday until 10 am Saturday. While Friday is too busy, I was thinking of waking up early and trying to get a lap in before our group bus leaves Saturday morning.

First, I saw that the trails open at 6 am. Is this still the case?

Unfortunately, I cannot take a bike with me, and was thinking of renting one. Does anyone know if the folks handling the rental would be amenable to me putting my clipless pedals on the bike for the duration of the rental? I never realized how used to clipless I was until I went biking in Vermont last year and left my pedals at the hotel. I went with flats and felt like I had no control the entire ride. Not a fun time.

Thanks,
Ed

Fantastic 4 / Combs Road Background
« on: September 13, 2012, 10:24:36 PM »
So I was just relaxing this evening and thinking about doing a ride down in HNF in the coming month, perhaps  Nebo north to south and then take Combs back. I like to look into the history of places that I ride and have always found Combs Road, and the HNF area in general, to be interesting.

I did a few google searches and found some background as well as some photos of when Combs was being used for offroading. I also found quite a few posts on offroading and adventure motorcycling sites discussing/lamenting its closure several years ago. One strand I found was fairly recent, i.e. June and July of this year, and was discussing how the closure was meant to be temporary and Combs was supposed to be reopened after 5 years and that time was past. Have there been discussions about reopening Combs?

Racing...from the novice to seasoned / DINO Warsaw
« on: May 02, 2012, 03:28:29 PM »
I was thinking about heading north for the DINO race at Warsaw in a few weeks. I have never ridden there before (and won't have a chance to before race day) but in looking at the course map I noted quite a few branch offs from the main trail which appear to contain technical sections. How many of these sections are used during the race? Also, which Indiana trail is this most similar to? Based on a GPS track I found via Google, it seems kind of like TR.

Find a Ride / Hills in Indianapolis
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:52:14 AM »
With a busy work schedule and living in the middle of a mostly flat county, I have been seeking out hills in Indianapolis that are relatively close to home to try to be somewhat prepared for climbing this year.

So far I have been using the following:

Crown Hill Cemetery
Hills around Butler U, including the hill going from the Canal Tow Path up to the IMA
Skiles Test Park hill
Paved bike trails and roads at Fort Ben
Gravel double track at Southwestway

Granted these pale in comparison to the hills down south in HNF and BCSP, but I figure they can't hurt. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Fantastic 4 / Berry Ridge Road
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:21:54 PM »
Can anyone tell me the surface material of Berry Ridge Road? I've ridden past it several times on Nebo but never really paid attention to it, except as mental note for a potential emergency bail out point. I'm assuming gravel.....

Find a Ride / Park City Trails
« on: February 01, 2012, 01:13:28 PM »
Looks like I’ll be spending a week in Park City, Utah in July and I’m trying to plan out potential biking (XC only) to be done while there. I’ve found several good sources of information online, and was thinking of having the Mid Mountain Trail as being the centerpiece of a few rides.  I’m expecting the altitude and the climbing to be my undoing, but I figure the resultant rest stops will allow me to take in the views.
Anyone had any experiences with the trails surrounding Park City or have any suggestions for specific routes?
Thanks-Ed

Racing...from the novice to seasoned / France Park
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:48:43 PM »
I did my first race earlier this summer in the intro division at Brown County DINO but unfortunately have been unable to get free for any races since then. However, it looks like the France Park race on 8/14 may be a possibility although I won't have a chance to get up to Logansport before that weekend. Can anyone provide any insight on the type of trail or if it is similar to any other Indiana trails?

Thanks-Ed
