Fort Harrison State Park / Where is everyone?
« on: July 25, 2019, 07:30:02 AM »
The Ft has been very strange this summer.  After the rain finally subsided and the trials ride ready I expected tons of riders.  But over the last several weeks I rarely see more than one other rider on the trails and no more than a handful of cars in the parking areas.  Last summer the parking was overflowing during the same time periods when I ride.  What's up?  Trails are looking pretty good.  Get out and ride.

Anyone with tires on the ground today?  Last post on the Trails Overview page says muddy but that was two days ago.  Praying for an afternoon ride today before more rain comes this weekend.

Tech Bench / Re: Creaking rear wheel
« on: July 13, 2017, 11:12:30 AM »
I just replaced that bushing due to a different noise.  The other noise would occur during fast coasting.  Almost a card int the spoke type of sound.  The creaking started about the same time but the bushing only fixed one of the noises.  The fact that I can recreate the current noise without any torque on the freehub tells me it may be in a different part of the assembly.

I may tear it apart again and look for other items that may have worn.

Thanks for your reponse!

Tech Bench / Creaking rear wheel
« on: July 13, 2017, 08:25:20 AM »
I have a Mavic Crossride rear wheel that is making creaking noises.  I have narrowed it down a bit using the following methods.

1 - It creaks if standing next to bike, applying the rear brake, and trying to move the bike forward and backward (with a little weigh on the bike to keep the tire from sliding).  I think this eliminates the chain and cassette.

2 - It creaks if the bike is upside down.  Again apply the brake and try to pedal.

3 - It does not creak when riding unless I am putting some torque on the drive train.

I am ready to tear it apart and see how the bearings and internals look.  Does anyone have experience with these wheels and have suggestions on what to look out for?

After talking with another employee it sounds like they put the bikes where the bellmen store luggage.

Thanks N9TKF - I had already called the hotel but they were less than helpful.

French Lick Resort / French Lick Resort - Bike Lockers?
« on: July 18, 2012, 09:05:26 AM »
I am staying at the resort this weekend and would like to know if they have a good secure place to store my bike.  I am happy to put it in my room if that's allowed but I doubt they want dirty mountain bikes going up and down their hallways.  I don't really want to leave it on the back of my car overnight either.

Thanks for any and all replies.

I stopped by the guard shack to get a status update on the bag I turned in last week.  They found the owner!

Plus, they told me they are on the look out for small grey car which was caught on video at the golf course (where this messenger bag originated apparently).

I just found a blue/black messenger bag that appears to have been stolen then dumped on Schoen.  I assembled all the contents and turned it over to the tall blonde at the entrance.  She said two cars had been broken into this AM and she would call the police.

It was close to the road so I am guessing someone threw it out their window or something after they got what they wanted out of it.

I've had a loose chain ring in the past that made lots of noises.  All bolts were finger loose before I figured it out - scary.

aglet = the plastic thingy on shoe laces.

« on: June 01, 2012, 12:41:15 PM »
If it is used it would probably be a good idea to give an oil change anyway.  I may have a Enduro Fork Seal kit that will fit it.  I bought it a few years ago then sold my bomber.  You can have it on the cheap if you want it.

There are lots of tutorials online that show how to rebuild forks.  It takes time but usually not that hard.

Here is a link to the crossride wheels.  I think i will go with them unless someone has a good reason not to.  They appear to have pretty good reviews on most sites.

I took it to Motion in Fishers since they are down the street from my house.  They tried a wheel retension and trueing.  I didn't even get the wheel on the bike and another spoke broke.  They want to sell me a new rear wheel at a pretty good price.

They are offering up a Mavic xm117 laced with DT spokes to a Deore hub.  Tempting but I want to make sure this is a good wheel for my size (210lb).  Plus I would prefer a whole new wheelset vs just a new rear.  No reason, just prefer it that way.

What wheelsets are recommended for a guy my size.  I'd like to stay under $200 if possible.  Jenson has a Mavic Crossride set for $165 - good? bad?
