Brown County State Park / Re: Hobbs Hollow Flow Trail
« on: June 09, 2017, 08:23:03 PM »
I haven't been able to make it to BCSP since Feb.  I was curious if any part of this is being ridden?  I realize not all trails are meant to be ridden before being completely connected so I thought I'd check in case I can get down this weekend.

Has anybody reported on trail conditions?

On a day as cold as this (10f) would a clear sunlight still be expected to thaw the trails?  I know it's a matter of checking it out...Just looking for a general idea before taking the wheels & post off, stuffing the bike in my car to avoid road salt, and bundling up in double neoprene.  🤔

Good call on not DYI for the threads.  They're rolled, so I'd definitely let a shop do it.  It might get tricky if you need to continue the thread (rather than cut the whole end off and role new threads on).
If that doesn't work out, I sometimes call Dan's Comp in southern Indiana when I build my own.  Sapim double butted spokes with brass nipples came to under $0.50 each if I remember correctly.  You can go cheaper than that too.

Twitter feed shows yellow.  Has anybody been riding recently and brushed against all the weeds that have a vine growing on them?  I'm wondering if it is poison anything, which may explain why my leg is so itchy.  I'd like to go again if anybody can confirm it's not poison oak, ivy, etc...

Has anybody seen if rain is coming down up there today (Friday)?  Looks like lots of rain tomorrow.

Did VSP happen to dodge any of the rain?  I was hoping to make it somewhere (anywhere) on Sunday.

Advocacy / Western NC trails being evaluated as Wilderness
« on: December 11, 2015, 12:58:40 PM »

Obviously nothing concrete yet, but this has the potential to be absolutely devastating for NC Mountain Biking.
Please have a read and leave comments as mentioned on this page.

Flat Fork Creek Park (Fisher) / Re: INFO on Flat Fork Creek Park

Will this area be similar to Indy parks in the 'no night riding' mentality? Or has anybody done this or experienced the take on this from Fishers Parks & Recreation?

Same here - says I took it. The link does have 'Survey Taken' in it.
Was the link originally from someone's Email inbox from a DNR subscription Email?
-Could be a personalized URL so it will only let the original recipient take the survey if it came from an Email or some other personalized source with any type of analytic strings.

Tech Bench / Re: Fat Bikes
« on: October 02, 2015, 02:29:25 PM »
I recently put the Surly Bud / Lou 4.8 tires on 100mm rims.
This likely requires a 190 rear spacing rather than 170.  The Q-factor is insane, but ooooh baby these are huge!
I can't wait to try in the snow.  I've only had this on hard-pack and quite honestly it wasn't nearly as slow as I had anticipated.
I did not have to brake at all on Town Run...rammed into each hairpin turn has hard as I could and never lost traction with 5psi (tubes).
The bike is a Mongoose Vinson.  Upgraded the brakes to BB7, and put 9 speed drivetrain.
I can't find a good price on a 2x crank....tried an X5 and the Q factor was so narrow the chain was into the tire.

Even with this super wide Square Tapered 3x crank, I had to take the smallest ring off my cassette and place a spacer behind the cassette to avoid chain rub on the tire in the lowest gear since the rim isn't perfectly true.

Things I'd like to update - The aluminum fork is like a noodle and is super flexy.
straight steertube with QR - almost impossible to find replacement forks other than cheap flexy stuff.
Wheelset is kinda cheap.
135 front spacing QR
190 rear QR
Hard to find replacements on these.

Here is a pic  :-D

Tech Bench / Re: GPS 'maps' instead of 'tracks'
« on: September 23, 2015, 11:39:24 PM »
Nate, what would you say are the best 'free' topo maps (or do you use any)?
The Edge 1000 actually uses (OSM) OpenStreetMap which is free and regularly updated, instead of the previous paid CityNav.  But there i was thinking a Topo map to lay underneath the trails would look pretty nice when going over elevation changes.
Hopefully I will have some free time soon to try out your other recommendations.
Note - I was looking here for the Topo maps.  The free stuff doesn't seem to be regularly updated, but likely not a big deal.
