Tech Bench / Welder recommendations
« on: July 26, 2018, 01:48:48 PM »
I'm too rough on equipment.  I have a steel hardtail and the welds connecting the seatstays to the seat tube are cracked.  Anyone have a recommendation for a good welder who'd be willing to fix this for me?

Trails are in great shape. Some slick leaves in spots, but very few puddles.  Tree down on Camp Glenn.

Rain missed the park today, trails are pretty much perfect.  Most of the spots that still look wet actually NEED wheels on the to get them recompacted

Hiked LC today, still awful greasy in spots.  Trails are RED.  I'll try to check them again tomorrow morning, but it's doubtful.

What a difference a day can make.  Lawrence Creek is GREEN, just one or two spots to be on the look out for.

Schoen Creek is mostly GREEN as well, but there are at least 3 spots around that loop that you should probably carry over.  The most obvious one is on the entry trail just below the log skinny.  That mystery drainage just started this spring and we haven't done anything to it yet.  Once you're past that, though, you're clear pretty much to the upper parking lot.

Temps below freezing again tonight, so there will probably be some frost and greasiness in the morning, but you should be fine by tomorrow afternoon, especially with highs in the 50s.

Go Ride!

Trails were great this morning, with some soft spots starting around 11 or so.  Afternoon was probably a little squishier, but not bad.  I'd expect the same for tomorrow, judging by the temps.  Get out and ride.

Tree down right before top of last climb before the flow down hill at NW portion of Lawrence Creek.

So before the big log pile jump?

Just curious, who does the trail maintenance for the hiking trails?  Last time I hiked camp creek it was getting difficult to follow in some areas.

The simple answer to your question is "no one".  I believe that responsibility falls to the park staff, but the park is too understaffed and underfunded to have that high on their list of priorities.  I usually stop to do basic stuff, moving deadfall of the trail, etc, but nothing more than that, and it's been quite a while since I was over there.

The more important question is who is going to finish the trail?  The bulk of the work was done by AmeriCorps volunteers a couple years ago, with some design recommendations from Mike Hufhand, but since then AmeriCorps hasn't been back, and work on the south leg of the trail has completely stopped.

It's a shame, too.  There are some great spots in that little tract of land that people should definitely see.

Forecast is for 15°F Saturday morning after over 24 hours of sub 25°F weather.  No doubt the trails will be solid.

Not sure why you would have gone out today since the temps were above freezing all day.

Back to riding now?

I'm here now, and it's about as GREEN as green can be.  Couple spots we haven't fixed yet are holding water, but if you've ever ridden the Fort before, you will NOT be shocked by any of them

I work in the Fort and my best guess is that after the rain we just got, the trails should be green by mid-October or so  :-\ :'(

Nah, most spots are draining a lot better now.  I'm more worried about how many trees are likely to be down.

Yeah, I wish.  I think Paul is the only one who can do that.

The trails are in pretty decent shape already, considering the rain we got yesterday.  There are quite a few slick spots, so I'd say RED for those of you who are training, but for the more casual rider I'd call it YELLOW.  Be prepared to dismount and carry over a couple spots if you go.

It's Sunday though, and there was already a lot of foot traffic when I was out there, so not the greatest day for a hot lap at the Fort anyway.  Temp is rising and the winds are as well, which should dry things up pretty quick.

*edit* Oh, and there's a tree down on Schoen in the 5 points area.  I was happy that I didn't have my handsaw with me, because if I did I'd probably still be out there working on it.
