Title: Avon trails surprisingly challenging and fun.
Post by: gt ss on July 05, 2011, 09:36:15 PM
I just got back from Avon. First time here since riding with 10 year old kids several years ago. I was able to ride the Advanced trails and they are great. Lots of elevation change  :), difficult rooty uphills  :) and twisty turny singletrack. :) :) :)

If it wasn't for the uncommunicative mt biker I ran into TWICE, I would probably go back some what regularly. I said "hey" the first time and "how ya doin" in the parking lot. All I got in return was a cold stare.

Thanks for the warm hello Mr Seven Cycles.

I must have just missed you, and no I was in a plain blue jersey.  Did you ride the trail past the train bridge? Flatter but still twisty and fun.  Glad you liked it, let a couple of us know if you come back again and maybe we can get some of the friendlies over here to ride with you.

yes I did. I followed some orange paint arrows the best I could. I like to ride loops :)

I think I've seen the same guy out there before.  I was riding with my 7 yr old and I tried to get out of his way best we could but of course we always bumped into him at log crossings or tight singletrack :-\...

Anyway, if I'm out there I always chat, and help people if they look like they may not have been there in a while.  The terrain is in my opinion the most diverse in the Indy area with super easy trails, to very technical trails with rooty climbs and some nice off camber turns to drop offs!

I've said it on here years ago, Avon has some good stuff and lot of potential. It just does not flow very well to make it a "go to" place. Would love to see Avon get more support.

The Indy area is wet, except for Avon. Get out and check it out, some good sections do exist here.

Might head there tonight or sometime in the near future. Looking at the property map...do you start near paw park then ride oriole, poplar, brian's, eaglesway, tulip, willow?

Having not ridden Avon in years decided to give it a shot and check things out again. First off the section by the softball fields (Brians freeride). This section doesnt really have many obstacles left except for the bridge, which has steps instead of a ramp. Not sure why there are steps for bikes but thats the way it is. Also there is a need to put a trail up the sideslope under the Poplar Pass trail, cause that lower portion is ALWAYS muddy. As for Poplar Pass it is probably the only original trail that could be left alone. Climbing Tulip is WAY too hard for most and pretty much the same for Willow Ridge. These trails are VERY rutted and just too difficult to attract most riders. There are some positive things down on the S end of the park and there is alot of area on the SW side that looks like it could be added to existing stuff. The problem would be hooking the N side to the S side of the park. Also ALOT of signs would be needed and closing off old rogue trails on the N side. This place has the base to be a fun, little park. I know there is a group working and trying to resurrect Avon. Id like to help, but it would take alot of people to make any real impact. Franke Park in Ft Wayne seemed to be in a similar state and it looks like they are turning it around. Maybe Avon can too!!

Forgot how much fun these trails are. Front trails are pretty thick with leaves making it a bit tricky due to the hidden roots and trail debris. Spent 20 minutes of my ride clearing some fallen trees and branches and I think nearly all is rideable now. I was also surprised to see all the new (to me) buildings and pavement. Will be back soon and hopefully it will get more riders to pack the leaves down. It's a great place for the winter and to work on some skills.
