The trails are in great shape.  It's a fun trail with interesting landscapes around each corner.  Be sure to ride it both directions.

Trails are solid and draining well.  They're nearly perfect today and will be even better on Sunday.  You'll have about a dozen spots where the wheels will throw up a little spray but other than that you won't know it rained.

The leaves are peaking:

The older trails (the Buffalo Trace loop) should be in relatively good shape tomorrow afternoon.  I'd expect a few wet spots but nothing that would be damaged from riding.

The new trails however (if you know where those are) will need at least another day to dry as they are still very soft and could be easily damaged.

I'll be riding tomorrow evening and will post another update after my ride.

Many new singletrack treats are ripening in the woods at French Lick:

trails were in good shape this evening.  There was a 1" downfall this morning but the trails seem to be staying solid and draining well.  This has a lot to do with the fact that the trail isn't getting overused when wet like many of the other trails in Indiana.  As long as the rain intervals allow a little recovery time 12-24 hours and we don't see a huge influx of riders during marginal conditions then these trails should continue to recover quickly after a rain.

There is rain in the forecast for the next few days.  Please keep an eye on rain totals before deciding to hit the trails.  Anything over an inch and the trails should be given a good day of sunshine to recover before riding.  thanks.

If you do choose to ride the new trail please plan on doing an out and back, turning around at this logover:

The 700' beyond this log was built last week during repeated rain events.  With the rain and last weekends race traffic the soils remain saturated and very soft.  We'll need at least 4 dry days in a row before this section will be ready to ride.  Please don't ride this section.  The ruts will just prolong the healing time.

Cleaned up the trail condition and left some of the first pictures of the trail on here. Trails should be green by afternoon here in the area.

I ran green only yesterday and the usual spots are still bad. The switchback in the pines that has the bricks is in desperate need of attention this season. The blue trail has a sinkhole forming where the trail went around an uprooted tree. It's on the hillside as soon as cross the first little creek going clockwise. I'll try to make mental notes of any other issues I come across this evening as I plan on running the green and blue. I'll include a pic from yesterday, but don't let the Instagram filter fool you. It isn't as muddy as it appears.

The trails are in good shape now.  No wet or sloppy spots on the green and just a couple slightly damp spots on the blue.  A few sticks are out there that I should have picked up but I was seeing how far off the pace of the race Cat 3 I was.

I should have just picked up sticks, that was an embarrassing time.  I would consider the trails a green status.

Thanks,
Jason

I would like to mentioned how much fun I have had at French Lick the past two weeks.  Thank you to whoever armored the sandpits and made the entire downhill fast flow again.  I appreciate you work.  Thanks.

Awesome, runyourdog.....thanks! I know John and Jason and a few other locals have really worked hard over the past month along with the staff at getting trails back to good riding conditions. Hopefully we can address some other little things this fall for a good fall/winter riding.

Appreciate the comments

I too have made several trips to FL the past several weeks, and would echo the sentiments of 'runyourdog' on the condition of the trail. Kudos to all. I would say that the clockwise downhill is as fast as I can remember (or I am just getting braver on a new bike). We rode both the green and blue today, and despite the fact that the blue is still a challenge for this old guy, we had a great ride. Only downside is that we encountered several groups of walkers/hikers on the green downhill. They were spread out into about 5 groups of two, something I was not expecting at all.  I came up on one group really fast on a blind curve, and I know that I startled them. I tried to be courteous to them by announcing my arrival (all the while locking up my brakes!) but I just was not expecting another group. Whomever you were, sorry about that!

This area has had hit and miss storms all afternoon. Some areas have received over 1.5 inches and some nothing at all. With this we had some pretty strong winds. Nothing lasted too long, but please just check the local radar prior to riding Sunday evening and or early Monday. Hoping it is over with.
Thanks

French Lick received 2 to 3 inches of rain in a short period that  has flooded the gravel road leading from the Valley Links Pro Shop to the trail Head. Will post up when the conditions improve.

PER direction from the Resort Staff, their are multiple tree's down and with close to 4 inches of rain they would like for everyone to stay off the trail until it has dried and the staff has an chance to get the trails cleaned up.Please respect the resorts wishes as we are all very lucky to have such a wonderful trail to ride (with hot showers if needed) We are working together with the staff and the management to make sure the status is accurate and up to date so we can continue to have a great trail to ride with great flow. I will post up as soon as I have been notified as to when it is able to be ridden.Thank you,Traci

UPDATE ON THE TRAIL STATUS:
FRIDAY 6/28/2013
Possible trees still down throughout the trail. The resort crew has been working on flood cleanup and will get to the trees as soon as possible. We are anticipating rain over the weekend, but hoping it will miss us so we can get the trail re-opened.
Thank you for your patience

UPDATE ON TRAIL STATUS AS OF JULY 2, 2013

Trails are going to be closed through the weekend as the trails are too wet to ride. Please respect the RED light and avoid this trail. Possible trail work day is in the works at the time and would appreciate any and all willing people to come out and lend a hand.More details will follow.Thank you

UPDATE ON THE TRAIL STATUS:
SATURDAY MORNING 6/29/2013After checking on the trail on friday evening, the trails are going to need to stay RED for the weekend if not longer. We have several areas that are going to need to be addressed, with the worst part being the creek crossings which have washed out and some may not be ridable at this time. The trees are small enough that can be addressed with a small saw and the entire blue has not been checked, but we expect the same if not worse for this area as well. Please note....their is no CLOSED sign at the trail head, but it is advisable that people not ride it.We are in the progress of trying to plan a work day as it is going to take more than a few people to get some of the areas fixed. If you are interested in possibly helping, please PM me for more information, and I will post up as soon as something is set.For right now it will be a little at a time as time allows for the few guys that are here along with the park staff as time allows for them.Thank you for your understanding and please pass the word along to those who do not watch this board.ThanksTraci

PLEASE USE CAUTION STILL ON THE TRAIL

The green is rideable, but still has areas that will need addressed on the trail day July 20.
The blue is not what it use to be....Per instructions of the resort, ride at your own risk.
It is VERY important that everyone be respectful of the resort and sign out.

If you ride the Blue trail you will notice orange flagging tape on the trail. Vertical flagging tape means use caution. Horizontal flagging tape (tape across the trail) means the trail is washed out. Ride at your own risk as emergency services may be slow to respond in the event of an incident. The map below is areas where caution is advised. Here is a link to the Google Earth file that has pictures of the caution area. Removed link due to too many broken picture links. Will try to restore later.

The Green trail is not in too bad of shape. Tree still down between 3 and 4. If you think you will ride and find it to be like the DINO race a few weeks back, it isn't..lines have changed.. We will try and get on the blue sometime this weekend or early next week. Everything is pretty well marked for everyone so if you get out have fun but be safe and keep your eyes open. Thanks :)
Title: Re: French Lick Trail Conditions
Post by: West Baden Iron on July 08, 2013, 03:54:52 PM
The tree between 3 and 4 has been cut.  Also 2 trees between 22 and 24 have been cut.

The wide section of trail on the blues between the pines down to the pipeline going clockwise is very rutted and dangerous.  An easy place to drop a front wheel in and go flying over the bars.

Those are the only sections I was on today but I talked to a few riders that rode the green and they said it was in good shape.  I'm hoping to ride tonight, so I will give a better update after my ride.

Thanks,

Jason

Great!! ! I believe the FL crew was able to get them this morning.
They are aware of the condition of blue and hopefully everyone will continue to use caution in those areas.
The green is getting better for sure.. just hoping all the rain goes another direction

I rode the green trails tonight.  Just a couple puddles and pretty dry overall.  However, just like Traci stated the flow is gone.  I have worked on the trails a couple times but I hadn't ridden them since all the storms.  A ton of rocks and roots are now exposed that weren't exposed previously.

About 5 creek crossings are drastically different as well.  It is gonna take some pretty major work to get the green back to how it was right before the race this year.

Definitely be careful if when you ride as a lot of the rocks have sharp edges and sharp drop offs.  I went over the bars once as my front wheel stopped abruptly.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Kris,

The area received about 1 inch of rain early afternoon, but the sun came out and has been dry every since. Most of the precipitation has moved out of the area and we are excepting a nice day on Thursday.
The Green trail will have some of the normal wet spots, and creek crossings I would advise using caution at.
The blue......please watch for the orange markings in the trees as those area's still have not been worked as of yet. Please check the map out that N9tkf posted for locations of some of these areas.
Thanks, and have a great ride.
PS
Please post up if you find something needing addressed as we are planning on working the trail in the evening on Thursday. Thanks :)

Hopefully they dry up by tomorrow afternoon!!!

Three of us rode two laps on the green this morning, and it was in great shape. A little damp in places, but we came away with clean bikes. There was a tree down about .5 mi on the green going clockwise, but we dragged it off of the trail. So, if the maintenance crew had been told about the tree, please let them know that it has been taken care of.

Rode at French Lick today and yesterday...today I did both green and blue trails CW.  Yesterday I rode the green trail CCW.  Gotta' say CW seems to break the climbing up a little, but CCW will definitely get the heart pumpin'!
The trails and views are awesome, and the deer and gray squirrels aren't bad either!  I must say, I came within five feet of both on the trails on multiple occasions.  Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to all who have put time into building and maintaining these trails...it's much-appreciated and they're awesome!

I picked up most but not all the downfall from Sunday's storms.  The green loop has two fairly large trees that are down across the trail. First one if riding clockwise is about 1/4 - 1/2 mile in. It could probably be handsawed if you have a high quality folding saw.  2nd one is approximately a 1/2 mile to a mile from the finish.  This one needs a chainsaw IMO. There's one chainsawable tree down on the blue loop as well.  It's right before the rideable rocky waterfall.  It's a big one.

The riding is spectacular right now.  You can see deep into beautiful ravines and valleys almost around every corner.  Running along the creeks and caves is breathtaking.  The leaves are down but are nice and packed.   99.9% dry.  Go ride this gem!

Trail conditions are great at FL as of 12/1/13.
There is a large tree down halfway between 10 and 11. Not too far downhill from where fire road D crosses the trail the second time.
The resort was notified, however he has been on vacation so they will be able to take care of it hopefully sometime during the week.
Unless we get a lot of rain, this is the trail to be riding right now. Hardly any mud at all on the trail, just great condition...and December of all times :)

Temps are great for winter riding at French Lick...just enough snow on the ground to allow you to take in all the beauty the trail has that we often do not noticed when it is in full bloom.
Please use caution as usual with the ground being frozen, and please report up here on the Facebook page for French Lick if you have any issues on the trail.

Temp and ground are frozen in the valley and the trail has held up nicely with the brief thaw cycle. Only a few spots that were sloppy over the weekend as we hiked areas of old issues looking for any new problem areas.
Looks like it has held up great during the winter months.
Please still continue to use caution with the ground being frozen, and please report up here or on the Facebook page for French Lick if you have any issues needing addressed pertaining to the trail.

How is a trail ride ride looking for Saturday afternoon?  Area still flooded?

Rode a couple laps on the blue and 1 on the green tonight and conditions were yellowish green.  Most of the trail is good but there are some spots that need attention.   Mostly routine maintenance kinda stuff ie. clearing drains of built up leaves which allows the drains to actually flow and dry up quickly vs damning up water and being susceptible to tire ruts, which further exacerbates the problem! I took care of several, but there's many more that need opened up.  Some need to be rearmored with flat rock.

IMHO, the "fireroad" that we actually ride in the middle of the blue loop could stand to be "snaked" or in other words, have some gentle S bends developed to help with water management.   There's some erosion happening that could be remedied quite easily.  This is the section of downhill after the longest climb.   It ends up crossing the powerline corridor as well.  Not sure if the fireroad needs to be there for access or not.

Mike..thanks for the great update ...I have change the trail status accordingly.  We have not had a lot of personal time this spring to be doing any maintenance due to family issues but hope to have some time freeing up shortly. Appreciate the details..This helps a lot. Traci

Trail report from 4/10/2014 is the trail is yellow/green in some areas. Please be patient as we work through some of the areas holding water which need work. If you are out there and have some time and would like to take some time to open up the drains, please do. We will address the area on the blue trail that needs worked shortly. The trail status has been changed to yellow, and this should stay that way unless we get any significant rain over the weekend. Thanks and Ride Safe

Just finished a ride, trails were in great shape.  I cleared several drains clogged with leaves but there was not much water anywhere.  Hot day with no leaves on the trees and wind has really dried things out.  I would  say conditions are green

I ride FL at least once a week and have never seen this square rock at that location You could see the inprint where rock came from on left side of trail going down hill. Was there 4-23 and 4-24 . There are (2) other rock /Jumps on the green downhill that have been there that have trail around them

10-4. I was somewhat concerned that you might have been confusing one of those two rock structures as unwanted obstacles. I'm also noting it may be optometrist time for me as I rode there the 24th and earlier that week and saw nothing. I fear bifocals are next...

The area has recieved a significant amount of rainfall this week along with some strong winds. The trail is currently RED and may stay that way throughout the weekend. Plans are to hit the problem areas by foot to verify conditions and will post up when and if they are rideable.
Please be patient and let the trail dry out.
Thank you

Rode FL yesterday.  Ground use dry to tacky in spots.  The water fall chute was slimmy and gulleys were filled with run off debris.  Three other people were starting their ride when I finished doing two laps.  Yellow to green with 70 to 80 weather ahead.  Mitchel to Paoli the speed limit is 35 due to road construction.

Managed to get in two laps on the green this morning before the race started. Several wet/soft/muddy spots so I would say the trail is still a solid yellow for today, but by tomorrow will be dry and green. Not sure how those spots will hold up for a race tho. I would say that 40 to 50 riders doing multiple laps will have some spots in bad shape for the next rain event. Might want to have the race organizers do some repairs after they finish their race. Speaking of the race, would have been nice if they had posted something in the forum about closing the trail for this race. I now see that it is in the calendar, but I don't check that before a ride. Was more than unhappy when I arrived (after an hour drive) to be told the trail was closed for this race. Fortunately I had a couple of hours before the start, so I had time to get a ride in. Just sayin'..........

Well Traci, I guess I'll take back that it wasn't posted. I don't usually check the FB page for info. When I want to go riding I usually just check trail status on the HMBA site, and check the forum for info. I didn't see anything there about the race. The good news is that I did get a ride in, and didn't waste a trip. I have done some limited racing before, but I am only two weeks removed from a surgery, and would not done well trying to race. Had a great ride (read that slow) tho.....

I hope everyone gets a chance to get out and enjoy it this week with the great temperatures.

Thanks to all that helped get the trail ready and for FLMB for allowing the race to be held.

Everyone I spoke to at registration remarked about how great of a trail it was, and the effort of the resort was greatly noticed.

Thanks again, and Happy and Safe riding,

I have to travel to southern IN tomorrow for work and was thinking about bringing my bike; would love to try the trails out again.  I haven't ridden down there since the DINO race last year and was wondering how the trail holds up with this rain we've been getting.  Looks like things where in good shape yesterday but not sure how much rain the trails received today.  Barring any overnight rain do any locals have an educated guess as to tomorrow's conditions?  Thanks in advance.

Barring any downpours tonight, trails might be yellow (best educated guess) tomorrow afternoon. If it is too wet ,bail out. Please report any downed trees to the pro shop or here.

You can check the rainfall in the area at this link: http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KINSHOAL2 (http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KINSHOAL2)

Sure..you park in the Golf
Pro shop lot where you go inside and grab a map and sign out.
From there you follow the sign on the gravel to the practice driving range and across bridge and down the gravel section and cross street to the TH.
Big sign and should be a excellent day on the trails.
Enjoy!
PS
inside the pro shop they have showers as well if needed after your ride:)

Rode both loops today and both of them just need some basic maintenance. Mostly cleaning organic from drains and grade reversals.  I did about ten of them but many more exist. The water is REALLY flowing out at FL. Spectacular scenery with beautiful waterfalls.  Get it while you can.

I also picked up a lot of downfall out there today. A couple big trees need cut out as well. One is located at sign 22

Hello all, new to the forums here.

I am from the French lick area. I also rode both loops on Saturday. Me and my buddy also picked up a ton of downfall, some small trees and larger limbs. The blue loop has at least two trees that I can remember that need cleared up, one of them is fairly large. For the most part the trail is nice and dry but there are several little mud spots in the shadier areas yet.

Me and a buddy went out Saturday after the rains and the full loop. It was muddy in the usual places but overall it was much drier than it has been practically all season. I will say there have definitely been many riders out and about when it's muddy. The typical muddy spots are becoming wider and wider where people are trying to go around the mud.
