Title: BCSP Trail Conditions
Post by: lenlog on June 12, 2009, 07:31:33 AM
I am going to keep the BCSP trail conditions thread pruned down to only those posts relevant to current conditions.

If your post is of "archival quality"  please use another thread.

Now that I got my smart-ass comment out of the way, let me tell you what I found today.

Yesterday there was a small water-filled spot on GV that I rode by (figured it was small, it'll dry up). Guess what? Today it was still holding water. Every time a rider goes through it, it'll cause a deeper hole in the mud, or riding around causing the trail to widen.

Now....on to the stick-drained locations, at least 3 - 4 good ones on GV alone. I'm talking 12 - 24" across and a couple inches deep. They were bone-dry today. The two guys I was riding with couldn't tell which spots I had drained. Hell I had a hard time on a couple I didn't think they would have dried up so nicely based on how bad they were yesterday before I drained them.

I'm not arguing that true work-day trail maint with proper tools is the best way to do things, but simply draining problem spots & scraping the leaves & mud away from the downside (think hockey stick lol)  is pretty good preventative maintenance I think. The spots I opened are now totally dry & will likely drain quite well for the next few months.

If more riders would do simple things like this, there would be many less "problem areas" that have to be addressed by full-on trail work days.

:)

I wasn't trying to say that your effort weren't worthwhile or appreciated.  My point is that we also need to have organized trail work days at Brown County.
Whenever I talk to State Parks or State Forests about more trails, their biggest concern is whether or not the mountain bike community can maintain more trails.  It is the most important thing we can do to allow us to continue to get access to build more trails.
Organized trail work days are important for several reasons.  First, it is how we teach mountain biker how to maintain trails.  New riders likely do not how to work on trails.  It is dangerous to encourage people who have not worked with experienced trail workers to do self-paced work.  If we want to continue to instill in mountain bikers the need for mountain bikers to take charge building and maintaining our trails, then we need to promote and lead organized trail work days.
Another reason is that there are many tasks that need to be done that require planning and tools.  We need to strive to make long lasting repairs.
The best strategy is to be preventive.  That means to address issue prior to the trail being damaged.  While riding, you are likely to only notice spots that have become issues.  If you walk the trail, and know what to look for, in many cases you can spot areas before they become issues and easily address them.
The bottom line is that organized trail work days are required to continue to build new trails at BCSP.  I would really like to see some local riders step up and organized some regular trail work days at BCSP.  When I feel the trail maintenance is under control, then I can focus on building new trails.

There was a tree down on HP before the storms came through. It was uphill from the bridge. 10-12", I think, and directly in the trail. Folks moved it aside to ride around it, but it was still there when I left as the rain started.

Also, turns out Mike Pence was staying at the Aynes House. I was taking a break at the top of Aynes when he and two friends walked up. I didn't know who he was, so I treated them like I treat all hikers. They were going to walk the fire road but wanted a longer hike than that, so I directed them around the Aynes loop and gave them one of the spare maps I carry. Then Pence introduced himself and shook my hand. If I hadn't been really surprised by the whole thing, I would've said something other than 'have a nice hike.' That's probably a good thing. Hopefully he got a sense that mountain bikers are a helpful, friendly lot.

However, it's too bad I know too little about the state's involvement and that someone else who does know enough wasn't there to give him the trail advocate word. :/

First, please report trail issues on the trail issues forum thread.

Second, we error on the side of leaving logs on Schooner.  Schooner does not need to be 100% Rideable.  Please leave the logs for now, until we have time to get some eyes on them.

Not forgotten,  more like bundled.
By that I mean that I have been working on the much larger picture this Summer and Fall.  While we did get formal approval for the Hobb's Hollow Flow trail and conditional approval for the HP Bowl Trail, we still don't have final approval of the whole next phase (Limekiln Return, HP East, Weedpatch Connector, HP Bowl, and Hobbs Hollow).  The problem with getting approval for one trail at a time is that changes to one trail can impact other trail alignments.  That was what happened with HP bowl.  Changes to the Weedpatch trail required us to make some changes to the HP bowl.

We expect final approval for the whole phase soon.

And we really picked up speed this summer at Yellowwood State Forest. I have just put together a rough concept for the South East Park of Yellowwood State Forest.

In the next few weeks, I hope to have approval for some work at Yellowwood.  So I will likely hold hold a meeting at BCSP/Nashville to discuss the big picture.  There are some trails that we will need to fund raise for and completely build professionally, some will be all volunteer built, and some will be a hybrid of both.

So HP Bowl is not forgotten, we have just been working on the much bigger picture.

Paul

We have volunteers who are approved for chainsaw work.  If you have chainsaw experience and safety gear (helmet, chaps, ear, and eye protection) and would like to do chainsaw work for HMBA you could work with me tomorrow and get on the list.

But we also need non chain sawyers.  Typically when big stuff is down there is also lots of little stuff that can be moved by hand or sawed by hand.  Also want to have helpers for the chain sawyers.

It also is a good time to look for sections holding water and doing routine maintenance.  So we can put everyone to work.  I will also be bringing the needed tools.

Red today, while much of the trail was drying up, the spring seeps are really running.  Until the leaves come out and the trees start sucking up some water, the trails will take a full day to dry out.

Also, we need to get the leaves blown off the trails asap as they are holding water on the tread.  I expect yellow conditions by tomorrow afternoon, but the trails need TLC to stay ahead of the spring riders.

The HMBA leaf blower is at Hesitaion Point Bike Shop.  If you have time to leave blow a trail, please contact Tad and arrange to pick up the blower. The leafs are holding moisture on the trails and blocking drainages.  Clear the tread and in wet areas, blow the leaves off the back slope and out of the drains.  We took care of pine today.  Please post up if you leaf blow a trail so that we know what trails have been cleared.

This photo shows leaves that are dry on top and yet are holding water on the dirt underneath.

Also please note the new gates on Pine Loop. Pine requires extra time to dry out, and we do not want to wait until Pine drys out to turn the status to yellow or green.  There are now gates on both ends of Pine.  The good news is that armoring we did last year really worked and we did more armoring today.  By protecting Pine in wet times and staying ahead of the maintenance, Pine will be ready for lots of use this summer.  Please respect the trail closed gates.  We will open Pine as soon as possible.
Title: Re: BCSP Trail Conditions

It is very hard to predict trail conditions this time of year and trails can change from good to bad or bad to good very quickly.

Things to remember.

1) With shorter days, colder temps, and no vegetation to soak up water, the trails will take much longer to dry from any precipitation.
2) Conditions can change quickly.  A trail may be frozen first thing in the morning, a muddy mess late morning, and then dry out by late afternoon.
3) Some in inaccuracies in the weather forecast can drastically impact trail conditions.  For example, I have had to cut rides short when AM temps were not as cold as forecasted.
4) At times sections of the same trail may have very different conditions.  Sections of trail exposed to the sun will melt much faster than sections in the shade.  Often riders say "most of the trail was in great shape" but those of us who work on the trails say that "some of the trails are getting heavily damaged"

We all have an impact on the trails, even on perfect days.  The key is try and minimize our impact.  Even those of us who have been riding a long time get caught by trail conditions worse than we expected.

1) If you are leaving tire ruts, then bail out ASAP.
2) Have a back up plan.  Most of our State Parks have excellent paved roads or pathes to ride on.
3) Support your local trail crews.  volunteer or donate.

Looks like we will see temps stay above freezing this weekend.  It is possible that the trails at BCSP will be ok in the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday.
Title: Re: BCSP Trail Conditions

We have worked with Brian for a long time with respect to trail conditions for races.  We understand the efforts put in by Brian and the commitment riders take when scheduling races.  The go / no go decision will be made by Brian and we (HMBA) are ok with the race happening in less than perfect conditions.  But ultimately we are all at the mercy of mother nature.

The good news is that the trails are currently in good shape and pretty hard packed.  The trails can handle a decent amount of rain on Saturday and be fine on Sunday.  One thing that helps is if riders are respectful of the trail in the days leading up to the race. We often see riders make bad decisions in the week leading up to a race, because they just have to get in a pre-ride of the course.  The damage caused by these riders impacts the trails ability to drain and dry quickly.

Because the race is limited to just a couple of trails. It is possible for the race to go on, even if all the trails at BCSP aren't dry enough, so the race can go one in some cases even when the overall trail system is rated as "red" on the trail indicators.

I have worked closely with Brian in the past to help make some tough calls at Town Run and we made some tough calls to allow the race to go forward, where Brian and I took heat from non racers about letting the race go on.  Ultimately those involved in making the race / no race decision understand the trail conditions and the ability of the trail to handle less than perfect conditions.

The other big thing that racers can do to help us allow races in less than perfect conditions is to volunteer.  If racers don't come out and volunteer, there is less incentive for those who maintain the trails to welcome racing and to repair trails after less than perfect weather.

I do often hear riders say that they skipped a race that went forward because they were concerned it was too wet.  I can't speak for all race promoters, but Brian has always proven to make good race / no race decisions.  So if the race goes on, don't feel bad about racing.  We do understand there races can have some impact on trails even in good weather and that conditions can change quickly even mid race.  If the race is held in less than perfect conditions, race and then come out in the next few weeks for trail work.

The bad news is that with all this rain, cold temperatures, short days, no trees to suck up moisture and heavy leaf cover, the ground is not going to dry up any time soon.

The good news is that we do have cold enough temperatures coming to freeze the ground.  So the only opportunity we are going to have to ride off road in the near future is when the ground is frozen.

Keys to riding frozen trails

1) Ride either very early or after sunset.  Even if temps are below freezing the trails can thaw when the sun warms the ground.
2) Get off the trails at the first sign of the trails thawing.  The trails are very fragile as they thaw out and a year's worth of damage can be done in a very short period of time.
3) Have a back up plan.  It is hard to predict frozen trail conditions and slight changes in temperature, wind, cloud cover, snow, etc.. can through off even the most experienced mountain biker.  There are lots of great road and gravel road rides to be had that are close to many of our trail systems.

I rode the roads in the park last night and ducked in a few spots to check out the trail. Trails are handling water well but are definitely red.

All of the drainage work that the trail crews have done will definitely pay off once this monsoon stops.

Trails are soft enough that it will be another dryish day before they can handle traffic.
Plenty of spots that are getting ruts where there isn't a puddle... Yet!

At 1PM there are still enough large soft spots to leave it red.
Pine loop is closed, and the field at the north lot is saturated.

I would say yellow on Friday. Someone may be more up to date than me.
Skipping Pine loop may be a good idea. Might be some limbs or trees down, and I ask of anyone riding to please kick what you can from the trail as you go along.

I rode Brown County last night. It is solidly yellow. Go enjoy. Pine Loop is sloppy and getting rutted out from people riding it wet. We closed the gates.  Please stay off at least for today.  If you see the gate closed, that should be a signal to not ride it. Lots of tracks going around the gate

I was just out there today and agree with Fett (not that anyone cares), but I'd caveat it a bit by saying that it won't take much rain to slide it right back to red.  Currently there's a 30% and steadily rising chance of rain starting at 7am Saturday.

Still yellow Monday afternoon.
Pine loop is closed since it takes longer to recover. Please don't go around the gate just because you think it's not bad and don't mind muddy spots. Think about the volunteers who would have fewer drains to clear if you skipped that one mile of trail.

I'm down here now... checking my limekiln from the road this afternoon, I would still say it's too soft to ride. Mostly yellow, but lots of red. There were still quite a few people out riding though, as well as a lot of track ruts at the limekiln trailhead. Maybe I'm a bit conservative with soft trails, but there were a lot of muddy looking bikes today :(

I'm hoping it's dry enough tomorrow, I'm guessing things should look good in the early afternoon.

I rode all of the north side of BCSP except Bobcat this afternoon (so HP, AY, BcC, GV, NT, NG, P).  Most of the trails were covered with leaves, much more so than last Friday.  Trails were mostly dry, but there were a handful of scattered puddles, some damp areas, and a few soggy spots.  The leaves made things a little unpredictable, both because the leaves could be slippery, and because they hid some of the rocks, roots and edges.

The weather forecast looks good, cool and sunny, should be a great weekend for riding!

The old system had issues so the MTB Project status widget is now being used. Go to http://www.hmba.org/trails-overview/ in the new website to check the status.

      Guys,

I attempted to add a link to the top of the forums to point to the new trail status page. The forums are picky about additional code so I will post to all the trail groups instead and focus on improving the Trails Overview page until I find a good method of modifying the forums template.

In the meantime the HMBA trail status information is now here. http://www.hmba.org/trails-overview/

Thank you for you patients.

Super appreciate your hard word Goat. I understand the new trail status update is now a link to MTBproject. What it doesn't have though is the capability to banter and ask questions. I was just surprised nobody has been down there in 2 days and updated. Ill try to get down there and update if I can get down there.

I live in Columbus and am in Nashville a lot.  If the status hasn't changed, it doesn't necessarily mean that nooone has checked it out.  It more than likely means that conditions have not changed and there is not a reason to do anything.

It rained a bunch Saturday Night and the trails were awful on Sunday. Its not like yesterday was 70 and sunny. I know there are some people going out tonight to check them out and riding the roads if they are muddy. I will try to update once I hear anything.

Just wondering if anyone that went out tonight has some update on the trail conditions. Hoping with the unbelievable February forecast in the next week or so that the trails will be nearing rideable conditions in the next few days and could possibly be good for the weekend.

Reports that I received last night are that North Gate, North Tower, Aynes and Green Valley are yellow. Most dry with a few wet spots.  Pine Loop is still muddy. I left it red and changed the others to yellow.

I don't know about the other trails, so I left them alone until some tells me different, but I suspect HP, Bobcat and Walnut are probably yellow as well.

Pine Loop is open. Be aware of two trees that are down. One you might get past, the other already has been bypassed enough there is a worn in go around.

The park is Yellow overall.

Rode North Tower Connect, Green Valley, and Hesitation Point this afternoon and conditions were good.  I didn't see any new soft spots, the places that were soft before the rain are only slightly worse.  The rest of the trails were mostly dry with some scattered slick but solid spots.  They were drying fast so they should be solid green Thursday.

Somebody changed ALL the BCSP trail conditions to red last night.  After my ride yesterday I was thinking they were mostly green, at worst yellow in a few spots.  So, am I missing something or was there an error in the red coding?

I didn't get there until 1 PM and it was yellow conditions. I didn't look to see what the status was to see if it agreed to actual conditions since I didn't recall my password so I could update the status.

The park received minimal to no rain last night (surprisingly) so I went for a ride this afternoon and the trails are in great shape.  Definitely a solid yellow.  Given the lack of rain in the forecast for tomorrow, I think we're in good shape until the next system comes in.

This time of year, it will be a day time call.  It looks to be cloudy and humid on Saturday, so it will not dry well, even if we just get a bit of rain.
Title: Re: BCSP Trail Conditions
Post by: Fett on March 16, 2017, 02:01:59 PM
When we rode Tuesday, it was mostly frozen, but the parts that were sloppy were really a mess.  We bailed to the roads at the North Tower. It is probably the same right now. It is going to stay above freezing between now and Saturday, so it just depends upon how much rain we get in the meantime.

Trails last night were in the best condition that have been in a while. Mostly green with a few wet/soft spots. Pine Loop is a solid yellow and I opened the gates.  Jerry Roberson, thanks for all the recent work done on Pine Loop. It is drying up nicely. Get out and ride before the rains move in Saturday night.

Elizabeth and I are probably going out tonight to clear drains on Green Valley to ensure that they dry as quickly as possible as next week is looking very rain heavy. It is probably a good time, if anyone has an open schedule, to do a little drain clearing on all of the trails, as the trails will be getting busier as spring gets here.

Pine and Green Valley might be sloppier than ideal, but overall the trail was getting dusty. Yellow should be fine until someone sees it needing to be red.

Ed,

I think Elizabeth and I are going to hike Green Valley this week sometime and work on it. It got rutted out in a hurry and is holding water.  It just needs drains opened back on the low spots, but nothing major. Most of it was very good on Sunday.

A coworker of mine is camping at the park this weekend.  A strong storm rolled through last night and there are lots of trees down in the camp grounds.  If the trails got the same winds, we may have a lot of trees to cut out.

I cleared trees and limbs on NT then went over to Limekiln and started from the campground end.  There were trees down everywhere in that area.  I only got as far as a point opposite the Stahl lake road before I ran out of light and fuel.  I stopped trying to move the debris off the trail.  Just sliced it and diced it and left it lay.

On NT, there are two raised root balls that will need to be dealt with.  One on the downhill section clockwise from the tower entrance could be a bit exciting if approached at high speed.

Given what I found on Limekiln, I would anticipate a significant clean up effort.

Lots of great work yesterday.

Only a few projects left to do from the storm clean up.  And the trails are starting to dry out.

When we left yesterday the seeps were still running.  Ed will be taking a look this afternoon and will report back.

The trails are still closed as we wait for the seeps to dry up.

Our volunteers put in huge effort over the last week and we need to give them a chance to recover by not creating work from riding too soon.

It looks good that the trails will open by Monday afternoon.

Trails were in good shape last night, dry except for a few minor seeps.  The crews did a great job clearing the trails.  Only saw one tree down on Aynes, but it was rideable and looked to be left as a "trail feature".  North Tower Connect, North Tower, and Hesitation Point were all clear.

Green
Getting dusty in some spots.  Pine could use some pruning, and along the first section of trail from the north lot it needs some lopping as well.

VSP supposedly got 6.5" of rain and BCSP had nowhere near that. We rode last night.  10 O'clock was a bit sloppy in the normal trouble spots, but everything else was fine.

I rode this afternoon (Monday the 19th).  Trails were firm, with some puddles, and some soft, sloppy spots.  I'd call it green with a yellow center, (like the trail rating icon that is a blue square with a black diamond in the middle).  I'd guess they won't be fully green until Wednesday.

I rode everything on the north side this afternoon (Saturday).  It will be yellow through the weekend, as Ed said, for some puddles and sloppy spots, but generally pretty solid.

Thoughts on riding this weekend?  We'll be camping and hope to hit the beginner trails with the kids and most of the other trails myself.  How might the trails hold up to the rain forecasted?
Title: Re: BCSP Trail Conditions
Post by: JCampbell on June 30, 2017, 11:22:41 AM
Unless we get a lot of rain over an extended time, the trails should dry quickly and hold up very well.  You may have scattered puddles and some slick spots for a day or two, but the trail surface generally stays hard and rideable.  Pine Loop (beginner) is the first to get soft and the last to dry, so it can be closed even when the other trails are hard and dry.

At 5:00 today the trails could not have been much better. Just a few scattered small puddles. Unfortunately it looks like they got a fair amount of rain after we left. Weekend may depend on how much rain they got. They were dry enough that a lot of it will dry quickly.

I was surprised at my knack of freeze/thaw knowledge. I rode along with what seemed liked hundreds yesterday. Most sections were perfect, but there were ALOT of slimy, sketchy sections. HH for example , the top was perfect, but at the end of the first section it was slimy as crap. Most of the bottom section was sketchy as well. I felt guilty at how dirty my bike looked, I hate cleaning but felt compelled to clean it yesterday afternoon.

Based on the hourly weather.com forecast it is likely the trails will be frozen from 7:00AM till 10:00AM.  They will likely thaw between 10:00AM and noon.

I would say that 11:00AM would be too late to start a ride.

All the BCSP paved roads are excellent for road bikes - provided you like steep climbs, fast down hills, and tight curves.  My notes say it was 14 miles and about 1400 ft of climbing, but I don't remember if that was just the figure 8 or if it included the Ogle Lake out and back.

Trails were good today. Maybe a few wet spots, with Green Valley having the most from what I have been told.
Title: Re: BCSP Trail Conditions
Post by: matt_laker on May 08, 2018, 02:40:02 PM
Green Valley was in very good shape yesterday with just a few small seeps in a couple areas.

Hobbs I would say had the most/worst spots of what we rode---several seep areas with some ruts, and several "dips" in between jumps that were holding a little water as well.

We didn't go on Pine, Bobcat, Schooner, or North Gate and only a small section of Aynes/North Tower.  Walnut & Limekiln had just a few spots with small puddles, very minor.  That was earlier in the day, so by the evening things had probably dried even more.

Trails were great condition Saturday.  Lot's of rookies out there.

Lots of new people pedaling full effort coming at us, and not yielding any room...even to us when we were climbing.  More than I ever remember before.  I clipped multiple peoples handlebars and I was off the side of the single track; because they were still in the middle of the trail going full effort/pedal.  People seriously need to be more considerate to other trail users, stop pedaling when passing, and give room!  Yield to climbers, it's super easy.

DINO races at Brown County this weekend! If you've never raced, join us! Your first race is free in our Intro division.

If you're not racing, the following times will have trail restrictions on North Tower, Aynes, Green Valley, and the North Gate Connector: Saturday, 9-11 am (trail run footrace), and Sunday 10 am - 1:30 pm. Please do not use these trails at these times.

At other times late Friday through Sunday afternoon, we STRONGLY suggest any riding on these trails be in the marked direction. Riders will be practicing the race route as marked.

I've received reports of some trees down needing chainsaw work on North Tower and Green Valley. Who are our certified chain saw operators that can help clear these out?

It'll probably be dry enough to ride, just watch for debris and blow downs until it's all cleared. Take a few minutes to pull sticks and branches off the trail if you ride.

I didn't make the rating, and I'm not there to know for certain how wet it is right now.
I would say and the red rating comment is it's because of rain is on the cautious side. From the conditions yesterday afternoon I would call it yellow due to the slippery conditions from rain unless the humidity is that high. It has been like a rain forest before and every surface was slick.

I would say and the red rating comment is it's because of rain is on the cautious side. From the conditions yesterday afternoon I would call it yellow due to the slippery conditions from rain unless the humidity is that high. It has been like a rain forest before and every surface was slick.

Thanks!!  I rode the trails and they were in good shape, Green Valley was still dusty in areas.  Rain in the area now so probably red.

Had/ having a lot of rain and heavy winds today. Once the weather breaks I imagine there will be some trees down and some washed out spots.

Was on North Tower checking drains today. Trail was solid with no puddling for the biggest part. The tails that would be more likely to be soft are Hobbs, Pine, and Green Valley.

Anyone know if the trails are dry enough this evening?

The trails should be dry enough. I can't say about the usual softer sections like Pine, Green Valley, and Hobbs. It was drier yesterday than  I expected.

Yellow.  Some wet spots. Leaf cover and the dampness makes it slippery in spots it isn't normally.  Some trees and limbs down.

Closed Pine. Depending on overnight temps it could stay yellow for tomorrow. Conditions are nearing the point where it will be best to ride only when frozen.

At 9:30 the trail is starting to thaw making it muddy. Once it thaws and dries it will be ridable.  Sometime this afternoon likely.

Anyone know trail conditions?

HMBA trail status is showing yellow conditions for much of BCSP.  Does that mean freeze/thaw considerations no longer apply?  In other words, can I ride after it warms up this afternoon?

If nobody gets to check in person it's a situation where you have to bail if the trails are soft. My guess is that the trails will be too soft in a lot of places. North Tower and Aynes are usually the first to be ready.

To everyone: I know making the drive to the park not knowing if the trails are OK isn't something anyone wants to do, so having a gravel or road route as a backup can save the trip. I know that isn't appealing to everyone either, but please don't take the stance of "I went there, don't care, so I'm trail riding anyway".

Just FYI, I got a call from a friend in Bloomington that rode BCSP yesterday afternoon.  He said the trails were in great shape and there was no mud, just a couple of puddled areas...so you should be good today.  Just keep in mind there's a chance for rain on Wednesday and this time of year it takes much longer for the moisture on the trails to clear.

Trails were good today while I was out clearing some drains.
Green Valley is solid Yellow. With the possible rain I didn't check Pine Loop or Hobbs.

Did some work on Limekiln. Trail had a lot of puddles and very active seeps. Some of the trail surface was soft where it looked dry.
I would say red conditions until Tuesday afternoon, then North Tower and Aynes should be yellow. Hobbs is closed, Pine might be. I would skip Green Valley until it dries more.

I've not been to the trails, but with the rain for the past couple of days it's a good idea to plan you weekend ride somewhere you know is dry or an all weather trail system.

Thanks Draggon.
During the iffy times I try to post after trail work or riding. I know some folks wonder when there is a gap in condition updates and it has shown Yellow on MTB Project for 5 days if it is still the same. I forget to update MTB Project now and then, but anyone can sign in and modify the conditions there if they check the trails and see the info needs updated.

Trails were good.  Sunday there is a chance for thunderstorms most of the day so conditions may change.
Hobbs may open Monday. Had some landslide sections that were worked on with an excavator and were like peanut butter earlier today.

Sorry, meant to type “solid yellow-green”, meaning you’re not going to damage the trail, but you still need to be cautious in select spots.
