Freeze/Thaw....Freeze/Thaw........Freeze/Thaw

Well, it's that time of year again. When the temperature dips below freezing at night, and goes above it during the day.
Try to ride early in the morning while the ground is still frozen. Once it thaws out, the trail will be very slick, (greasy), on top from the moisture that has been forced upward during the night. As the day warms up, the trail can become soft down several inches. Which is when riders can do some serious damage, leaving ruts that stick around for a long time.

Sometimes late in the evening also works for a ride after a freeze/thaw cycle, especially if it has been a sunny, warm day.

Late morning, when most bikers are used to rolling into the trailhead parking lot, can be the WORST time to start a ride in the winter. Midday doesn't work during freeze/thaw!

Some other winter riding tips;
Try to find out beforehand if the day is going to be sunny or not before riding. Cloudy days can increase your riding time by an hour or so, even if the temp goes above freezing.

If it is going to be a sunny day, try to ride the sunny side trails early in the day while they are still frozen. South facing trails can turn soupy even at below freezing temps, once the sun hits them full-on.

Leaf cover can also make a difference. Well covered trails might not freeze at all, and if they do, they thaw out slower.

Try to be closer to the trailhead as the temps warm up. Conditions can change rapidly, and pushing a bike with two inches of peanut butter mud on the tires back four miles to the truck is pretty frustrating...... Been there, done that! >:(

Winter riding can be a challenge, but also a rewarding experience if you plan ahead....... (And you don't feel as guilty about watching football the rest of the day.  ;D)

Don't be a Smuck, and ride trails when they're Muck.

What are those new dining options?  I'll be camping there Oct 25-28 and might like to go out for a meal or two.

There's a new Gold Star Chili on Hwy 50 and there's also Crossroads restaurant on the west end of town. The Mexican place got closed recently by the law, for questionable accounting practices.
Ernies Pizza, on Hwy 421 south is good. And I believe that The Yellow Dog Tavern is still open on the downtown square.

Crossroads is a good choice as is Gold Star. Yellow Dog keeps erratic hours and has been closed every time we've gone by. I think Hong Kong Dragon has closed. Super Val is gone and the grocery store that will replace it is not yet open. CVS has their typical assortment of food items.

I'll throw a vote in for Ernie's pretty good and cheap a great pizza combination and there is a booze shop right on the way.

...so when every thing else drys out. shadow is still closed till the fence comes down.

Just curious if Shadow Run just takes longer to dry or if there are other factors/unique work to be done on that trail in particular.

~Yet another Dave

Yes. the Shadow Run trail generally takes much longer to dry out than the other trails @ VSP. Especially in the cooler months. I'm no geologist, but it appears that certain areas store up water over the winter and release it in the spring. It's like a giant sponge that someone is stepping on. About the only thing you can do with the trails in those locations is be patient and wait for the water to quits seeping out of the ground.....And keep people off of them.... Unfortunately somebody rode Shadow earlier this year and make many deep ruts, slowing the drying process, and creating more work for the few volunteers there are here.
Thanks for the offer to help down here. I'm sure Mike can find something for you to do.
BTW, the official Faceboook page is called; Versailles State Park Mountain Bikers.

Is there a trail that can be ridden on the Hassmer Hill side?  And if so, how do you get to it?  I'm camping in the park through Sunday night and would love to check it out?
Title: Re: VSP Trail Conditions
Post by: DITCH on October 27, 2014, 05:56:10 PM

There are no actual trails built on Hassmer Hill yet. Only a trail there and back. The old road base of Finks Road goes down into the park to the old 4H retreat. It is very cool and worth the ride.
The trial connects off Grand View at the far north. The connection will take you west down County Road 200N, blacktop/downhill. At the bottom is a small parking area and the trail is just to the right. The first 100 foot section to the creek crossing is rough, but fun. Cross the creek, up the hill. Tough dirt uphill. The trail at the top comes out on Finks road, turn left, 200 ft in through the gate, follow the old road base and injoy.
If you cannot find the connection off Grand View. Take the fire road out to 200N and go west down the hill.  8)  Thanks to the vision of all the trail volunteers.

Rode everything today. Most of the trails are yellow bordering on green, and should be if we finally get a sunny day that warms things up.

Shadow Run was VERY yellow on the flatter upper portion, though. That's going to take awhile to dry out completely. The fun downhill was in pretty good shape, though.

Can anyone give an update on conditions?  I would imagine that conditions are yellow or green based upon how good BCSP was this weekend.  Just curious as the Tri State 6 hr series is racing there on Sunday.  The forecast for this week does not look good, though.

Last night I saw on the news that SE IN is a bit drier than "average". What that means on the ground, I'm not entirely sure. But with the forecast, that's going to change soon enough.

That area caught a really big shower last night around 5:00.  It just missed my place.  I don't have a report from the ground, but I'd be very surprised if its fit by then.

Hope to ride at Versailles this weekend. How often do you update status?

The trail status indicators are typically changed when the trail conditions change.

It usually takes a couple of days without rain for the trails to dry out.

It seems like it's been hard to find a couple days without rain lately.

thoughts on conditions for DINO race?
Title: Re: VSP Trail Conditions
Post by: holzhaus on July 16, 2015, 07:40:53 PM
Good news! Based on all the reports available from the local trail crew, riders, and forecast, we should be able to have this weekend's DINO races on the trails at Versailles![/size]However, there is some work to be done as a result of the storms. A group will work on the trails Friday at 6pm, and then again early Saturday morning. Meet up near the DINO registration tent. YOUR HELP NEEDED - even if for a short time while you are riding. There are branches on the trail (take a small folding saw, toss off branches as you ride) and a couple of washed-out places (needing some digging / rhino tools, for those who are equipped / educated)Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

For those of you who want to ride trails (not race) - race times are 9 am - 11 am Saturday (XTERRA Triathlon), and 10 am to 1:30 pm Sunday (SRAM DINO MTB Series). We STRONGLY suggest choosing other times this weekend to ride.

Do to the storm that came through Saturday and blew down over a 100 trees. the trails are closed all this week. we will evaluate how bad it is this week,  for a trail clean up this Saturday. please meet at Trail Head Sat 25th 9:00 am. if you are (very skilled)  with a chain saw please bring one. the plan is to have a crew of at least 3 on every trail.  Thanks

Well right now there are over 150 down trees all over the trails. But 90% of them will be gone by 1:00 pm Saturday. So after that your good to ride

Trail is green!  Unless the yellow is for sticks/debris on trail?  Had to stop many times to pull stick out of dérailleur/drivetrain.  The "Last Chance" to the river is nice and a hard return climb!

Notice of trail restrictions 9/12 - 9/13

Versailles State Park mountain bike system will be in use for races nearly all day Saturday and until noon Sunday.
A trail run is Saturday from 9 am to noon. At noon, the 24 Hours of DINO starts.
The route includes the majority of mountain bike trails, including Turtle, Creekside, Grandview, Cliffside, and Shadow Run.
Recreational riding is strongly discouraged. If you do ride recreationally, please follow marked direction (clockwise) and yield to racers who approach from behind.
Entries are still available for both events. Mountain bike riders can go solo for 6, 12, or 24 hours; or ride on a relay team for 12 or 24.

The trail is currently red due to all the recent rain but I would think it should be green again some time tomorrow. The leaves have been blown off all but about a half mile on Grandview. I don't think Last Chance has been done or anything across the creek on the Hassmer Hill side but the water is too high to cross the creek anyway.

It isn't supposed to freeze over night, but there is a chance of rain.  Not sure anyone can give you certainty.  If it doesn't rain, it should be ok later in the morning.

There are some great back road to ride South of the park, if you get there and it is too wet.

It was not on mtn bike project so i'm clueless what these 2 new trails do??  thanks for the feedback.

Yes, it crosses back over Finks Rd. & hooks into Wormhole.  There are a couple entrance points to Wormhole, and Wormhole has been getting more added to it (trail work on it as recent as last weekend).  Be sure to sign up for Hassmerfest when it comes online starting Aug. 1 through Bikereg.com to see even more (I'm sure more will be built on Wormhole by then and will need "burned in" so the more the merrier! 👍🚵
