Trail is tore up in a lot of places from hikers. Need about 3 days of drying before tires hit the dirt. There are 30 to 60 foot sections that are total muddy foot prints. I have been out quite a few times trying to drain the worst spots and remove the leaf debris in areas so it will dry faster.
Good news is the places we have rocked are holding up very well. Bad news is the only rocks we have left are bigger than what can be carried.
-
we are in contact with the Park Staff. The trails have been closed to all trail users at times this spring. We will evaluate and see if we need to do this more often next year.
-
The weird thing is the hiking only trails are fortified with gravel and therefore drain much better. I don't know why people feel the need to hike on the muddy trails.
-
Some people just like mud boggin'. My three year old loves to walk in mud.
-
The problem is that there is much more mileage on the shared trails than the hiking designated trails after the Lawrence Creek hiking trail was shut down. There are 2 new connector trails on the hiking side adding about 1.5 miles or so but they are not marked. You can only run just under 4 miles without backtracking even with the new connectors.
Unless a hiking only trail is added on the Schoen Creek side, hikers, dog walkers and trail runners will always use the Bike trails regardless of how much lamenting/ group think goes on here. Sad but true.

We inspected most of trails last night, working on drainages, etc. There's a few slick spots but overall the tread is nice and firm and shedding water well. YELLOW. Keep your eyes open for changing conditions though. Chance of rain and thunderstorms are high through Saturday.

There is a large tree down across the Schoen Creek trail just before pipedream. It's about 2 feet in diameter.

Are you gonna get it with your handsaw?

7-8' diameter easy. Two cut chainsaw job for sure!
Rest of trail is in great shape!

Has anybody seen if rain is coming down up there today (Friday)? Looks like lots of rain tomorrow.
-
Tree is cut and trail is clear.
Thanks to whoever got the chainsaw out (heard it may have been DNR?)
Rain has avoided FH so far, but lots of thunder around...

It got hit around 6:00pm...I was finishing up on LC when it rolled through, trails were getting pretty wet/saturated so I bailed and went to SWW where it didn't even end up raining (should have gone straight there!). >:(
-
The trails are in pretty decent shape already, considering the rain we got yesterday. There are quite a few slick spots, so I'd say RED for those of you who are training, but for the more casual rider I'd call it YELLOW. Be prepared to dismount and carry over a couple spots if you go.
It's Sunday though, and there was already a lot of foot traffic when I was out there, so not the greatest day for a hot lap at the Fort anyway. Temp is rising and the winds are as well, which should dry things up pretty quick.
*edit* Oh, and there's a tree down on Schoen in the 5 points area. I was happy that I didn't have my handsaw with me, because if I did I'd probably still be out there working on it.

Can somebody switch the status light then? I don't have access anymore and mixed messages can be confusing.
-
Yeah, I wish. I think Paul is the only one who can do that.
-
We are working on upgrading our trail conditions indicator. It beyond my computer skills so I can't provide any kind of time line.
-
The radar makes it look like the rain might miss ft ben so I could still ride after work. If anyone is out that way please post whether or not the rain hits the fort!
-
Tornado warning right now.
-
It's coming down pretty hard at 56th and Mitthoeffer.
-
Ride Cancelled! Thanks Obama!
-
I work in the Fort and my best guess is that after the rain we just got, the trails should be green by mid-October or so :-\ :'(

Nah, most spots are draining a lot better now. I'm more worried about how many trees are likely to be down.

The Fort should be rideable tomorrow afternoon. I did some drainage work and grade enhancements on Schoen and it was definitely borderline red/yellow with some slick spots. Fatbikes would be helpful to smooth out the rough edges.

Trail is RED and will be RED for awhile. Lots of mud spots out there from too many people on it too early. With the rain tonight I wouldn't think of riding it till this weekend....maybe.
-
The Fort is YELLOW. Yellow means there are some slick spots and it's not perfect. Be prepared to bail if conditions change.

I just did a lap of lc and it was a mix of dry almost pavement like hard pack for 70-90% but all Creek crossings and some spots were loose still but had dry trail next to them. Now when I say loose I'm running 45psi in a 26x1.95 small block eights.
-
Yea. I rode Saturday and it really should be green. I like the flowing creek crossings.. It's like a little bit of Brown County here in Indy :)
-
Has anyone been out to the fort? I feel like we didn't get very much rain (at least compared to forecast) on Friday and Saturday. Was looking to ride tomorrow evening and hoping it would be good.
-
I'm here now, and it's about as GREEN as green can be. Couple spots we haven't fixed yet are holding water, but if you've ever ridden the Fort before, you will NOT be shocked by any of them
-
Tree is gone just after the new wood pile on Schoen. No more knocking the tree with your handlebars.

Rode great. Thanks Jeff and Jason for another great feature!!

Awesome! I've been afraid to try that because of that tree and my 750mm bars :)
-
Anyone know if the trails will be ride-able later this afternoon???
-
I was there this morning to retrieve check point markers from our Central Indiana Adventure. I would call it yellow, won't be green for a couple days.

Changing to red until we get reports.
-
Trail is still red.
Want to mention for when the trail goes yellow or green, take it easy on the new banked turn just before the pill box. It's going to be soft and loose for awhile until it gets settled in and packed down.
-
Tree limb down on LC just after the connector trail to the gravel lot.
Walked all of LC today. Lots of soft/mud spots, but most of the trail is in good shape. Will be good to ride Monday.
One really bad spot on the LC downhill and another on the left turn after the first log drop.
-
I would avoid riding behind the barracks completely. Long stretches of mud. Schoen is worse than LC overall.

Assuming still red tonight on this section?

Looking to ride the Fort this afternoon, anyone with any recent intel on what kind of conditions to expect? We don't ride the Fort much, and I recall it holds moisture a lot longer than SWW or Brwn Cnty etc. Thanks!

Haven't been out to FH since Monday, but with the recent good weather I bet FH will be nearly perfect. The Fort drys way faster now due to all the hard work of the trail crew. Enjoy!

Has anyone been to Fort Ben today? Wondering if trails might be green for Fat Bikes now?

I was. There were a couple wet spots where the trail dips down into the creek on Lawrence creek. Schoen creek is green, the only wet area is when it opens up in the field.

Rain last night. Waiting on trail reports.
With the weather cooling down it is going to take longer and longer for the trail to dry out enough to ride. Once we get to below freezing temps then above freezing, it will only get worse.
-
Thinking about trying the Fort later today. Any guess on what the conditions are? I'm sure there will be a lot of people in the park today.
-
Not sure how much rain the Ft got last night, anybody know if the trail will be rideable this afternoon?
-
At my house the ground underneath my trees was dry this morning. I suspect the worst you might encounter is some slick leaves.
-
Rode the trails today. only some minor wet spots. Dried up quick from last rain.
-
I haven't heard anything in a while. Do you think the trails will be OK Saturday afternoon? It looks like it will only get down near freezing tonight so I doubt there will be a very hard freeze. Not sure what to expect this time of year.

Nice and blue this morning.
-
SC was 95% excellent just before dark. Sunday morning should be decent, but watch the greasy spots and skip the meadow behind the barracks altogether.
