Herman and John, form Progressive Trail Designs have started construction of the trails at Flat Fork Creek Park.

I will be organizing some volunteer days in the next couple of weeks to support them.

We will be looking for a Trail Crew Leader for this part to maintain the trails.  Anyone interested can shoot me a PM or come to one of the work days.

Here is a map link to the new Park. http://mapq.st/1QjAyC7 (http://mapq.st/1QjAyC7) It's hard to miss with that big sledding hill sticking up like a sore thumb...that would be the one you hit on a tree when you came around a turn too fast-again.

Looks cool - I haven't been able to make it out yet due to work schedule.
Just a few things out of curiosity...
Any ideas if / what costs there might be? (Entry, pass...)
Hours of operation (night time for example)
Would this be expected to be a little more resistant to rutting in the winter?
Is it a loop, or does one head up to a high point and ride down?

There is no entry fee to the park. It is a one way trail with a skills section in the middle. The entire trail was compacted so it dries really fast and hard so it should not rut very easy. We had a 5 inch rain go thru here one night and 2 days later the entire trail was dry. Hopefully you can get out soon and Ride the trail. You can PM me and I will meet you and show you around.

The park is still not opened not sure why but the trails are done and ready to Ride. There has been no work over there in at least 2 months. So if it opens this year I Will be surprised.

You are welcome.   The track is a lot of fun with multuple features, banked turns and pump areas.  The two riding walls seem a little on the steep side and its really hard to stay on them.  Riding multiple times in a row with definitely get the heart pumping.  Still lots of fun.

Officially the park is still not opened. But the trail needs to be ridden. I don't think that it will open until next year with all the work that is left to do. I don't have the power to tell you not to Ride it or to Ride it but it needs to be used.

Just rode and it is awesome. Not a long cross country trail, but all the wooden features and berms make it a big playground. Teeter-totters skinnies wallrides...you can tell it was professionally built.

There is also a loop around the the hill on the Southside of the park but the landscapers planted grass seed over the trail so it is over grown.

i live about 2 minutes away and see cars with bike racks parked there a lot! it takes a lot not to pull in and go for a ride!  are all these cars just people working the trail in or are they people that shouldn't be there? how do I get a pass to "work the trails in"?   ;D

Riding walls are perfect.  If you have enough speed you can easily hit it the whole time.  It takes some practice. Super fun place to ride!!

I'm so pleased with the positive post about Flat Fork Creek. We have put a lot of work into it and that makes it all worthwhile. We ride there usually 4 times a week and do trail maintenance also. If anyone wants to Ride anytime in the evenings just hit us up and we Will be there. I'm going to weed eat the outer ridge trail so there will be more miles to Ride. Again thanks for all the positive feedback back Rick and Chris

Finally after months of no work being done they have started work on the parking lot getting paved. Hopefully they will be able to get the grass cut this season. At least there is progress being made in the rite direction.

Made out out again today to ride at Flat Fork Creek trail. Looks like Rick M started weed eating up the south hill for more trail and ran out of string. Only made it about 20 yards. Rick if you paint a line or mark posts where the trail will run on the hill I can help weed eat since it is so thick on the hill. Just keep me posted if you can mark it so I know that I would be cutting down the right line.

ATinman thanks for offering to help with weedeating the ridge. I'm currently recuperating from a bike accident the other night and just got permission from the Town of Fishers to get the weeds down so we can ride it. It is very thick and my weed eater wouldn't touch it. So if you are willing to give it a try I can meet you over there anytime that is convenient for you and show you the trail. If you would just post time and date and I will be there. It will add around 3/4 of a mile to the current trail system. Thanks a lot for the help and look forward to meeting you Rick

The other day I tried to ride around the "open land" trail that seemed to be there a couple months ago. I think this is what you guys are talking about opening up.
It seems like not only is it overgrown, but it's very rutted from erosion. Would it make sense to use some sort of mini-excavator or small dozer to grade and remove weeds at the same time? I'm not sure how it was built in the first place, but the same equipment would do the job quite quickly, I'm sure.

I think it should be noted that there is currently only one or two places to park a car and they Are on a rutted dirt area.  I didn't see a reasonable way back to the parking lot.
The park looks like it has a lot of potential and a lot of money invested, but almost seems abandoned. Is there still work going on?

There is still a lot of work to be done but as far as the trail goes it is in great shape and there are people out riding it everyday. I believe that the city of Fishers and the contractor are having problems. They start doing a job like the parking lot and then just stop? It is very frustrating for us as riders to see the park just sitting there with no progress but the trail is in great shape. I'm out for the rest of the season due to injuries but still get over there to do as much as I can on the trail with help from my wife. I will be over there tomorrow at noon meeting with a rider that has volunteered to weed eat the southern ridge. Fishers did give me the permission to get the ridge cleared so that trail can start to be ridden. So if anyone would like to come out and Ride or help cut the weeds off the ridge come on out around 11:30/12 Sunday. Thanks

Rode out there with my son today and he loved it, great little trail.  Upon leaving we were approached by a guy in a golf cart who I think lived across the street.  He was very friendly asking how our ride was but also informed us of multiple paramedic calls that have been made to the park, specifically due to people getting hurt on the man made trail features.  He told me one of the paramedics said if they have to come out again they would call the police!?  Which begs the question, are we actually allowed to ride the trail?  The last thing I would want is for the city to have to shut the thing down or remove the unique features here.  I understand the park is not finished but the MTB trail seems to be finished  and in my two visits it appears that it is frequented by many novice and inexperienced riders.  I saw a guy in flip flops today with no helmet on a very old school cheap bike.  This being said the signing is not adequate for the park.  I am not sure if they plan on adding to the signage but visitors to the park need to know that some of the features on the trail are only for experienced intermediate to advanced riders.  The features are well built and very safe for riders of appropriate skill level, however I'd hate to see any more issues between the city and the remaining construction of the park due to folks getting hurt on trails that may not be officially open.

Thanks

I'm with you on this, Fishers seems to have dropped the ball on getting the park finished and it could be that it gets a black eye even before it opens. It's going to be a totally fun place to ride but some of the obsticles are way beyond the skill set of a beginning rider, and it really seems like money was spent there when it could have gone to making the trails have a more intuitive flow.

The south loop trail is almost half way cut down. The weeds are waste high and very thick so it is very slow going. My wife has been using a hand sickle because the weeds are to thick for our weed eater. This will definitely add distance to the trail and was also compacted by the builders so it is also fast and flowy. I'm very limited on what I can do due to my injuries but my wife is a very determined women and will not stop until the trail is done. Thanks Rick

Just spent 2 hours on the south ridge trail today. Sprayed weed and grass killer as much as I could on the trail to kill off the root systems. If we get some tires on the trial it will also help kill off the weeds and get to trail down to some fast flowing dirt.
I am hoping to ride many laps on it tomorrow morning to put a few miles on it to help it out.
Saw 1 set of tracks on the trail today while I was spraying so someone took advantage of the newly cut trail.

Thank you very much VONZIPPER for mowing. Cutting all that by hand would have taken weeks.

Was great Rick, still makes me a bit nervous riding there while it's posted but I get over it about the time I slam down on the Teeter Totter! The trail sure needs riders to get it to look more like a trail, but it's a heck of a great time with all the berms and the terrific setting along the creek. It needs some work in order to make the route more intuitive but it has a TON of potential. I still don't get some of the obstacles, or the reason for them. Most of them could have been made from earth mounds and they would have been just as challenging yet a lot safer for all riders, they are fun but the potential for injury is just something you can not ignore and it won't be long, I fear before they are removed.  Jim

I agree. there is great potential for injuries. I would say half the people I see out there are young teens. most I see wear helmets but, in my opinion, its just a matter of time before we hear about something bad. its a great little trail though.

Ever seen a skatepark? The features at Flat Fork Creek are tame compared to what cities and towns have been building for years. I'd rather fall off a 3ft skinny onto dirt than flatbottom a concrete bowl. It's well built and safe. Kids need to learn how to fall down.

Thanks for the positive feedback on the trail. Now for the negatives first of all the middle is a progressive skills area meaning you start on the smaller things and work your way up. Everything out there is totally ridable and if you don't have the skills or the ability to Ride them don't ride them. There is a cheater line off to the side of every obstacle to go around them. Any time you get on your bike YOU are taking a risk of getting hurt. I really don't think removing the obstacles will solve anything just because some people can't ride them. It's a very small trail and people are making a big deal out of the man made stuff. It's obvious the park isn't open meaning the signs aren't up yet on the trail yet. If you don't want to Ride because it's not officially open yet don't. As for the trail not looking like a trail I'm not sure how much more needs to be done to make it look like a trail but feel fee to go over and work on that. The trail is ridden everyday currently there are 6 people over there riding. I guess you could go to the town council and have the trail paved then you can ride a Monon in the woods. Not sure how everyone will be happy. I will keep on riding

i think Rick is just not sure what is meant by 'needin more riding to look like a trail'

When I went out there a bit ago it looked just as much like a trail as any I've seen, so maybe elaborate on that?
Title: Re: INFO on Flat Fork Creek Park
Post by: VONZIPPER on September 21, 2015, 02:28:39 PM
What I meant was that it needs more people to ride it so it doesn't look so virgin, it's a great trail, and lots of fun. Of course it looks like a trail..it IS one. But the fact remains it does not flow and it has no logical route to follow to make it intuitive at this time. The rock crossing at the base of the bridge is all but impassable, forcing you to walk across and if you don't you can end up in the hospital..trust me I know, I went yesterday. If you think you can do better across the rocks I'm happy to set up video and watch. The obstacles are fine with me, I rode them yesterday and so did the kids with us, they had a blast. The only thing I would have changed about the park is a bridge across those damn chunky rocks then a rider could continue along to the other half of the run. Rick I think there is room for improvement and if Fishers would follow through and finish the park I'm sure most of it would be accomplished. The way it stands now, none of us know what the plans are and when.

The creek crossing is also rideable we spent a couple hours leveling and replacing big rocks with little rocks my wife and daughter both ride it. I hope they leave it to me mountain biking is about challenge so if there's something I can't ride I figure out how to. And BTW I wish I was 15 again lol

I rode it for the first time last Thursday. Definitely has some great potential! I actually wish there were some actual jumps and hips...but the walls are nice and flow well! most of the berms flow well too given the amount of space. Good job to the team that built it  :)
Title: Re: INFO on Flat Fork Creek Park
Post by: ATimman on September 22, 2015, 01:00:25 PM
The rock garden under the bridge is very rideable if you have the speed to hit it properly.
It is not meant to ride across at moderate speed. Rock gardens are meant to be ridden into fast and let your shocks do the work while you coast across. I have both worked on the park and ridden it many times. I have never had a problem with the rock garden however it is more an intermediate to expert obstacle and will be difficult for new or beginning riders with no training on ridding a rock garden.

Wear pads, ride safe and ride within your ability.
Mountain bike forever

I did the same thing about a month ago.  Luckily, my xray came out negative for broken bones in my hand. I attributed it to going way too fast over those rocks.  My front tire planted and sent me right over the handlebars.  lesson learned I guess. ;D

I planted too, loved on the rocks and ended up a bit worse for wear, I will just admit it is beyond my ability to cross safely on the fly and not attempt it again. For what the hospital bill on this one is going to cost I could have built an optional bridge there and named it after Darwin.

It's a delicate balance of weight between the front and rear.  I like to call it floating over the rocks, I use the same technique over very rooted sections of trail.  Line choice is also critical so you are not trying to steer to much.  My 5 year old was able to cross 90% of it on his 20" Giant so I don't think it is too difficult, just requires an uncommon technique for most trails in this area.

Honestly, I can't help but laugh at some of these comments. If that "rock garden" is giving you troubles, its obviously you that needs to improve as a rider before attempting it again. Don't blame obstacles for being "unsafe" You are the one that chose to ride it.

How are we going to improve the riding scene in Indy when everyone cries every time there is a somewhat technical obstacle or a jump. Like someone else said, have you been to a skatepark? the city will allow fun stuff on our trails if there is a legitimate demand for them.

just requires an uncommon technique for most trails in this area.
Perfect point.. I was able to get out of work early yesterday "Thanks Pope Francis"  and rode some here in MD, there were a few area's that were pretty steep and more like a ravine than a trail.  I just dismounted and walked them after failing to make it up.  Definitely something that would be doable if I had more time to learn technique for that type of obstacle.  I welcome any new type of obstacle, no shame in walking something until you have the skill or confidence to ride it.  The more variety of technical obstacles we can get close to home the better riders we can be when we travel and ride unfamiliar trails.

Will this area be similar to Indy parks in the 'no night riding' mentality? Or has anybody done this or experienced the take on this from Fishers Parks & Recreation?

Hey Zach,
I was leaving the park one day as it was getting dark and I saw a couple riders just arriving. So there are definitely night riders,  but I can't say anything about Fisher's  Parks and Rec.

Flat Fork Creek is officially open. There are signs on the trail and a map of the park on the shelter wall. To check trail status go to the Fishers park Twitter page. There are plans for more trails and a pump track in the future. If you get out and Ride this new trail please post what you think of it and if you have any ideas for future work please post that also. The parks department seem to be very willing to make this a great place to Ride. Thanks

Rick,

Were you able to ride there today?  If it's dry enough I may try to swing out tomorrow.

The trail is RED and with all the rain forecasted for the next few days it will probably be awhile before the trail is dry enough to Ride

Took a ride out there last week when things were dry.  It's a short track, but has potential.  Did a short aerial video tour of the park for anyone interested.

Trails are currently red. Because of the wet and windy weather there are lots of trees down acrossed the trails that need removed. Please stay off the trails till conditions change.

Has anyone been on the trails lately? The last post said there was debris on the trails and some trees down.  Will HMBA be maintaining the downed trees or will this be the city's responsibility?  Thanks

The trail maintenance is going to be the Town of Fishers responsibility. The trees were cleared the next day. I got ahold of the park commissioner and he sent a crew out.

There is some debris on the trails and a few low hanging limbs do to the weather.
The trails are however BLUE. I will try to get out this weekend and work on cutting limbs and clearing debris for any winter riders.

I rode these trails for the first time today. Very nice what has been built so far. Unbelievably nice park,  I especially liked changing out of my wet sweaty kit in the spotless HEATED restroom.

Great park with really nice trails and other features!  I hiked around out there a couple weeks after the grand opening.
