2008 started out with the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association (HMBA) receiving the State Parks and Reservoirs Partnership award for the development of multi use trails at Versailles and Brown County State Parks. In addition to the 10 miles of volunteer build trail at both Parks, HMBA also built new trails at Brown County State Park through a $150,000 Recreational Trails Program (RTP) Grant.  By using a combination of paid professional trail builders and volunteer labor, HMBA was able to produce world class trails while making the most of the grant funding.  The Walnut Trail and Limekiln Trail were opened in 2008, with Pine Loop and Schooner Trace scheduled to open in 2009.

HMBA’s success with the RTP, led to the award of $250,000 from the 2008 State Trail Grant.  These funds will develop natural surface trails at Versailles, Harmonie, O’Bannon Woods, and Fort Harrison State Parks.  Shadow Run was completed in 2008 at Versailles State Park through the State Trail Grant.

Brown County State Park's mountain bike trails have been crowned as "among the best in North America" in Bike Magazine's March issue.

In its article "33 Best Rides in North America" the international magazine says the following about the trails, which are located on the outskirts of Nashville, Ind.

"This expanding trail system is quickly becoming a favorite destination for Midwest riders . its 19 miles of singletrack is among the most varied terrain east of the Mississippi. From berms to steep switchbacks to tight trees to rock gardens, these trails have it all.  And even more are on the way, with an ambitious expansion plan already in the works."

The trails also were honored as runner-up in the Best Trail Network category by the magazine.  Kingdom Trails in East Burke, Vt., won the category, and Park City, Utah, joined Brown County State Park in receiving a runner-up award.

According to the article, "Nominations came in from the four corners of the continent, and the 11 trails we selected-along with two runners-up per category-offer some of the best mountain biking on the planet."

IMPORTANT WINTER TRAIL INFORMATION PDF Print E-mail

When soil freezes all the moisture turns to ice crystals between the particles of the soil  and in clay or loam soil they are tightly packed together. As the moisture freezes the crystals expand and tear the clay apart shattering it, then as it thaws the soil become more porous and allows more moisture in. This is repeated with every successive thaw.

In Indiana we can get as many as 100 freeze thaw cycles in a season.

So, please be very careful when trying to ride the trails in the winter.  The best time to ride is when the trail is frozen solid.  On days when the temperature goes below freezing at night, the worst thing we can do is wait for the sun to come out and warm up the trail before riding.  The trails can be very soft even if it hasn’t rained recently. Even if the temperature stays below freezing South facing trails can defrost in sunlight and turn to mush.

If you are leaving ruts in the trail where you have ridden please leave the trail. The ruts will allow even more water to remain on the trail and make it even worse. If people see you riding they will want to ride too, so very soon the trail reaches a point of meltdown.
